Flacco In A Long Line Of Ravens' Contract Needs
Joe Flacco wants a new contract and he is upset he may have to wait until next year.
And I still am upset those jerks in New York won MY $319 million Mega Millions jackpot. I had big plans for that jackpot. You know how many cheeseburgers you can buy with that money?
But I digress.
Flacco sounds a little entitled in this argument. While dealing with egos is part of dealing with football players, Flacco seems to be making a lot of noise he does not need to be making.
Flacco recently did an interview for the Baltimore Sun, where he said this:
"I think I?ve established myself,? Flacco said at Haruki Nakamura?s Japan relief charity event at Ripken Stadium Saturday. ?If you?re not confident with who I am, I?m not sure what a year is going to make.?
Flacco added, ?Ideally for me, I would like to start talks this year. Next year, I feel like they would have to throw something in front of me that?s going to be pretty legit in order for me to not play out my fifth year. If you don?t sign me this year, you?re making me play a whole year of my contract with no security. If you want to sign me after next year, what?s playing six more months.?
Flacco sounds like a spoiled brat in the last part: "You better pay me or else!"
It is fine for Flacco to feel that way, we all get upset with our employer come contract time, or "raise" time, assuming you are lucky enough to even be able to bargain for one. But Flacco is applying the same failed logic the players as a whole are toward the CBA, that being just because they do get a better deal than most people, they deserve a better deal than most other people.
To quote Clint Eastwood, "Deserve's got nothing to do with it."
But there is a world outside of Little Joey's. There are 51 other guys on the roster, all of whom would like new contracts at some point and, HEY!, Haloti Ngata is one of them.
James Walker of ESPN elaborates:
"It's understandable that Flacco has his sights set on a new deal. But looking at Baltimore's big picture, it's also easy to see why the team wants to wait until 2012. This year alone, the Ravens have to re-sign one of the biggest free agents available in Pro Bowl defensive lineman Haloti Ngata. He was given the franchise tag, but it's unknown if the tag will stick when the new collective bargaining agreement is reached. Either way, the Ravens plan to make Ngata one of the highest-paid players at his position. That will not leave much for the team to hand out big-money deals to outside free agents, let alone Flacco."
If Flacco is a team-first guy, then he will have no problem waiting one year for a contract. If he is not, the Ravens have bigger problems than what they are going to pay free agents.
