While Cam Newton is viewed by the experts as the top choice in most of the draft boards because of his great potential, the top defensive line player is believed to be Marcell Dareus because of his ability to play right away.
Newton may be a star in-the-making. However, Dareus can turn into a star right away.
"A scheme-versatile player who can be a disruptive, penetrating force as an interior lineman, or a fantastic pass-rusher as a defensive end in a 3-4 scheme, Dareus is a safe pick. He doesn't have remarkable quickness, but his agility and versatility at a full 319 pounds is the stuff of an elite lineman."
Dareus provides teams with great versatility on the line because of his great blend of football skills and high-motor.
CBSSports.com's Rob Rang says:
"Strong, stout and quick, Dareus can play inside and out in either scheme. He might lack the upside of the some of the other DL in this talented group, but is the safest of the bunch."
More importantly, unlike other front seven guys projected to go in the Top 10 like Da'Quan Bowers and Robert Quinn, Dareus has had a near-spotless injury and personal background history.
"The Broncos are in desperate need of a true impact defensive tackle to anchor new coach John Fox's 4-3 defense and will be holding their breath until Carolina picks. Denver will be thrilled if Dareus falls here because he fits the mold of an every-down difference-maker and also carries minimal baggage."
The most common words to describe Dareus is safe, elite and immediate impact. And nothing else.
That said, he's a very tough guy to ignore if you have one of the worst run defenses like the Denver Broncos.
