NBA Playoffs 2011: Andrew Bynum, Crime and Punishment

Already the speculation runs around the countryside like Frankenstein’s Monster, or is that Phil Jackson’s Monster?

What punishment shall Andrew Bynum receive for taking off his jersey before he left the floor?

Oh, that will be added into the total game suspension for the elbow to the armpit of J.J. Barea of the Dallas Mavericks. Since Barea was one of the shortest men on the court, it is clear that Andrew Bynum was aiming for a part of the anatomy that would have turned little Barea into one of the Sopranos.

Bynum’s fine size may not quite match his ego, but talk of suspension may. The punishment should fit the crime, which in this case is the public and wanton humiliation of the NBA. It’s always interesting how one bad apple turns the entire public relations strategy on its sow’s ear.

Players on steroids may have received less, but Bynum embarrassed a sport well known for its scandals, morons and boys behaving badly. That takes some doing.

Already some Puritans of Basketball are suggesting 20 games, at a minimum, for his suspension, with time off for doing “NBA Cares” public service announcements, shaving off 15 of those.

Assassins doing their dirty work in Dallas are nothing new.

The Lakers have a fair share of these culprits: start with Kobe and his mouthful of mush, and throw in Ron Artest with his best fists of fury charging into stands and into fans’ mouths.

In Bynum’s defense, he could have pulled out that Magnum pistol he keeps in his pants and taken aim at Barea. And, we don’t mean popping the cork on a bottle of bubbly. Or, am I thinking of another NBA player?

Phil Jackson who often lectures on Zen and the Art of Motor-mouth Maintenance seemed nonplussed by his abominable players reaching the outer limits of Himalayan intolerance. How many Yeti practice Zen, Phil?

We suggest that the NBA require Andrew Bynum to come out on center court in Dallas next season, alone, with one spotlight on him in the dark. Then let the crowd cascade him with boos for five minutes.

Cowards die ten thousand times.
