NFL: Carolina Panthers Receiver Steve Smith May Become a San Diego Charger

There have been rumors swirling that Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith would like to become a San Diego Charger for the upcoming season.

The San Diego Union Tribune reported that Smith would like to join either the Chargers, Baltimore Ravens or Oakland Raiders. It is believed that the Chargers are interested in Smith’s services and are looking at his current situation in Carolina.

Steve Smith does not fit the typical build of a San Diego Charger receiver, as he is listed at just 5’9" and 185 pounds. AJ Smith is known for acquiring tall, lanky receivers, (examples: Vincent Jackson, Malcolm Floyd etc.) but I believe that a Philip Rivers-Steve Smith connection could be very successful.

Rivers has excellent accuracy, and Smith’s short stature would not make a difference when it comes to Rivers completing passes, as he has thrown to even shorter players over the years. Darren Sproles is just one example of a short player that Rivers has thrown to, and he has had good success with that connection.

This is still a developing story and nothing can even be discussed between the Panthers and Chargers due to the lockout. While Steve Smith would look good in a Chargers uniform, there are still many hurdles that lie ahead, including his remaining contract that is due to pay him around $14 million over the next two years.

There would certainly have to be a contract restructure in order for Smith to join the Chargers, as his production has declined over the past few years.

Smith’s decline may have had to do with his frequently changing quarterback situation, and inept offense that has failed to move the ball, which resulted in a 2010 record of 2-14.

It is also uncertain if Smith would be willing to work with rookie quarterback Cam Newton when he is definitely on the back-end of his career.
