Ryan Mallett: Why Drug Rumors, New England and Tom Brady Don't Mix for New QB

Ryan Mallett is heading to the worst team possible

Very few people can claim to know just what Bill Belichick is doing when it comes to the NFL draft, but bring in Ryan Mallett is a new head scratcher.

The Patriots, who don?t need a quarterback, but could use a lot of help defensively, or a running back(for God sake?s a running back) drafted a quarterback.

And the mother of all question marks heading into the draft.

Ryan Mallett isn?t a concern as far as his throwing motion, his footwork, or his ability to grasp basic football terminology. It?s his off the field judgment that could get him in trouble.

Mallett drug allegations were enough to make a highly touted prospect free fall into the depths of the second round. It?s a wonder how he?ll fit in New England.

First he?ll have to wrestle with the fact that his playing days will be few and far between. Sure, there is opportunity to shine in a back up role, but not for Mallett. Need proof? Ask yourself if anyone would know who Matt Cassell was if Tom Brady hadn?t got injured so early in the season?

When you combine his lack of playing time, with the intense media scrutiny that New England has you could be setting up Ryan Mallett for a future full of boredom, frustration and disappointment. If that?s the case and Mallett does have a penchant for drugs, there is no telling just how bad things could get.

They say idle hands are the devils plaything, but so are idle quarterbacks.

Welcome Ryan Mallett, your first litmus test as a man has begun.
