2011 NFL Mock Draft: Is Nick Fairley Worth the Risk for Tennessee Titans?

2011 NFL Mock Draft Gets Four Experts to Unanimously Agree on Nick Fairley to Tennessee Titans at No. 8

Looking at the Tennessee Titans at No. 8, we can see that they actually have a few major needs but are not too far off from being competitive again.

The quarterback position is the most glaring need and brings up the most intriguing scenario.

Jake Locker of Washington is the best available quarterback and there has been numerous rumors surrounding his possible selection at this pick.

There are also a few other players linked to the Titans at the quarterback position in the later rounds leaving them with the opportunity to add a more valuable player here which makes the most sense overall.

Mel Kiper Jr.: Nick Fairley

Defensive line probably falls lower on the list of team needs behind the obvious question of who will be taking snaps, but it's not a minor need. And to get the most productive interior lineman in the college game last year, a player who was simply unblockable in a number of key games, is a solid get for the Titans at No. 8 overall. Fairley gives you immediate help at a spot they need to address, and he offers the value of a top-five pick. Disruptive versus both the run and the pass, he will help this defense now, and they can look for a linebacker later on.

Rob Rang: Nick Fairley

The Titans have other needs, but could have a hard time passing up Fairley, arguably the draft's most talented player, should he be available here. Tennessee hired Tracy Rocker to be their defensive line coach in February. Rocker was Fairley's defensive line coach at Auburn the past two seasons. If his former position coach doesn't feel strongly enough to bang the table to get the 2010 Lombardi Trophy winner inside the building, Fairley could be in for a significant slide.

Pat Kirwan: Nick Fairley

Fairley has been in this spot for three weeks. His college position coach, Tracy Rocker, is now the defensive line coach for the Titans and he will get the most out of Fairley, who is a bargain at this spot.

Jeff Risdon: Nick Fairley

Hard to see the DL-needy Titans passing on DL coach Tracy Rocker's prime prodigy while he was at Auburn. The Kenny Britt issues make a WR a more distinct possibility.

My pick: Nick Fairley

The Auburn defensive tackle is the most disruptive defensive lineman in the entire draft and has the potential to be a Warren Sapp-like talent.

His physical abilities aren't the question, it is his work ethic and character that have teams passing on him early.

It certainly would not surprise me to see him go as high as No. 2, but I think the potential surrounding Miller and/or Dareus will certainly push him down.

Fairley can take over a game and Kirwan's point about his former coach now running the defensive line in Tennessee does not go unnoticed on a team that has a major need for a playmaking lineman.
