Week 16 Fantasy Football TE Rankings: If Jason Witten's No. 1, Then Who's No. 2?

Writing up Tight End analysis is a bit like fishing on a pond with one fish in it.  Before Witten emerged via the exit of Wade Phillips (or Tony Romo, take your pick), it was Gates and Dallas Clark that were dominating TE stacks.  Now that both of those cats are shelved for the remainder of the regular season, we are left with one sure thing.

After spending a couple of hours on Christmas morning perusing 250+ pound offensive bruisers, I think we've got some interesting information to present.

Merry Christmas everyone, and best of luck to those fantasy warriors playing for all the marbles this Sunday and Monday (and tonight for those of you with Cowboys and Cardinals).

  1. Jason Witten at Arizona - 8pm Saturday - Witten is the top TE play based on that he's outscoring the next closest TE over the last five weeks (Boss) by over five fantasy points per game. Since Wade Philips was given the boot, no player has benefited more than Witten. Why Philips chose to ignore Witten during his tenure, I guess we'll never know, and if you have a life full of interests, you will never care to.
  2. Kevin Boss at Green Bay - 4pm Sunday - Opposing TEs have been the only ones scoring through the air vs. the Packers, so Boss of all G-men pass catchers makes for the best play. The Packers have allowed the 4th most fantasy points to TEs on the season. Boss has been 2nd highest scoring TE over the past five weeks of NFL action, so he makes a rock solid start.
  3. Marcedes Lewis home vs. Washington - 1pm Sunday - It's all on the line for the Jags, and they'll need their biggest target in this one as MJD's status is looking more grim by the minute. The Redskins have allowed the 10th most fantasy points to TEs on the season but the 4th most over the last five games. Marcedes comes in as the 3rd highest fantasy points producer on the season and over the last five weeks and is in good health. Fire him up.
  4. Jacob Tamme at Oakland - 4pm Sunday - Collie's KO is great news for Tamme fantasy owners for between his return and Tamme's brief bout with a knee injury, his numbers went into the pooper. His knee is feeling better and he should again be good for 8-10 targets and a possible TD vs. a Raider defense that allows the 11th most fantasy points to TEs.
  5. Tony Gonzalez home vs. New Orleans - MNF - Gonzo torched the Saints for 110 yards and a score in Week three, and the stage could be set for a repeat of that performance. An Atlanta win would give them home field throughout the playoffs and their first division title in six seasons and only their fourth in franchise history. The Saints are middle of the road in defense of opposing TEs (773 TE receiving yards on the season and only three TDs to TEs - one of which went to Gonzo).
  6. Vernon Davis at St. Louis - 1pm Sunday - The Chargers made shutting down Vernon Davis their #1 mission and it appeared to pay dividends as they crushed the lost-at-sea 49ers in Week 15 while limiting VD to one catch for four yards. Alex Smith's affinity for his bruiser TE was made pretty obvious in his first two games back under center (VD registered 196 yards and two scores in those two games), and the two should have better luck facing the Rams, or will they? The Rams have only allowed three TE receiving TDs all season on only 620 yards (3rd fewest fantasy points). Josh Morgan has made some noise of late, but with Gore out, and Crabtree playing like the bitch that she is, I wouldn't be shocked if the Rams just mimicked San Diego's game-plan and double and triple teams VD all game.
  7. Chris Cooley at Jax -1pm Sunday - Cooley was targeted seven times last week and registered five catches for 62 yards and a score with his new QB, Rex Grossman. Grossman appeared to click with everyone in his first game as the starter, and that figures to continue this week vs. a Jaguar defense that doesn't defend any one position well. They are ranked in the bottom 10 defending QBs, TEs, WRs, and RBs (bottom 11, actually). The Jags have done better lately, containing Tamme and Oakland's Zach Miller in consecutive weeks, but the Raiders were busy stuffing Darren McFadden down their throat, and Collie was in the fold stealing targets from Tamme et al.
  8. Owen Daniels at Denver- 4pm Sunday - Daniels is back in action, hoovering targets in (18 in two weeks) in Houston. Denver allows the fourth most fantasy points to TEs, and with Bailey shadowing 'Dre all afternoon, Daniels figures to receive the most attention in the passing game once again.
