New York Mets Trade Francisco Rodriguez to the Brewers

In a very surprising move, it has been reported by both Jon Heyman and MLB Trade Rumors that the New York Mets have traded their closer Francisco Rodriguez along with cash considerations to the Milwaukee Brewers for two players to be named later.

This move is not necessarily a sign that the Mets will likely be sellers this season. By trading Rodriguez, the Mets now will have more payroll flexibility.

This move is undoubtedly a win for the Mets because they will no longer be responsible for K-Rod's option that likely would have vested after this season.

Trading Rodriguez signals the fact that Sandy Alderson will likely make a big contract offer to Jose Reyes this off season. The Mets have now freed up a lot of cash for next year, so they should be able to sign Reyes.

The Mets have a few young players in Pedro Beato and Bobby Parnell, who could potentially be replacements in the closer role. Jason Isringhausen could also be used in the closer's role, but there have also been talks that he might be traded.

While the players that the Mets will acquire are not known yet, they will likely receive at least one B-/C+ prospect. This includes players such as Scooter Gennett, Wily Peralta, or Caleb Gindl.
