I am not apologetic for what I said. To go back on my words would not be very forthcoming and put my integrity in jeopardy. I don’t mind being proven wrong either. Today the Seattle Seahawks proved me wrong and they absolutely decimated the former Super Bowl champions in a playoff game that I said they had no business being in.
The Seahawks proved me wrong. They made me eat every single bad word that I wrote about them over the past couple of months as it became more and more clear that the Seahawks had the chance to be the first ever NFL team to win their division with a sub-.500 record.
When I was watching the game and the Saints took leads of 10-0 and 17-7, I thought it was going to be over pretty quickly. Matt Hasselbeck was forcing passes early and a true-to-form early interception.
There was an early shot of Matt looking down on the sideline with Charlie Whitehurst and JP Losman standing behind him.
Could have been Clipboard Jesus time once again and he would have been meat to the Saints.
Matt recovered though, completed his next 10 passes and just got into a groove that he only briefly got out of in the fourth quarter. He looked like the old Matt Hasselbeck, the 2005 and 2007 versions. How those who were chanting for Clipboard Jesus soon forget.
Another man I have been extremely hard on was Marshawn Lynch. I promoted that he lose the nickname Beast Mode because he hasn’t done anything in the past few seasons to even remotely earn that nickname.
Then the run happened in the fourth quarter to seal the game.
You can compare it to something from Earl Campbell, Jim Brown or Christian Okoye. Just a devastating run in which he ran over what seemed like every Saint on the field, some from the sideline and even some of his own players.
It is the most memorable big run in the playoffs in recent memory. I can’t think of a single run that was bigger, more powerful and more meaningful.
The city of Seattle needed a big win like that.
Things have been very bleak on the sports page for the town ever since the Sonics left and headed to the middle of nowhere to the city in which we do not speak of.
Today Seattle took away a chance for New Orleans to gain a repeat Super Bowl and hopefully Seattle will also relieve them of Chris Paul and the Hornets very soon.
The city is alive and extremely happy with the team that no one gave a chance to win this game. Every prediction, including my own had the Saints winning by close to three scores.
Throughout the game I ate my words, crow, humble pie and just removed Rex Ryan’s wife’s foot from my mouth.
Please feel free tomorrow to harass me mercilessly as Duke pounds on my Terrapins and Aaron Rodgers carves up the Eagles. It is completely fair game and welcomed.
Seattle deserved this victory; today they were better team.
Fight on Seattle, fight.
