Steelers' Trademark Defense Rises Up to Take Down Jets

PITTSBURGH -- There were instances during the season when the Steelers defense was considered more dirty than dominant, a time when they were fined for foul hits, a time when they seemed to question their defensive soul.

Can we be what we have always been? Can we play the game the physical way we are taught?

This Steelers defense all season kept navigating its way through the traps, around the sinkholes. It kept hitting. It kept hurting. And against the Jets here on Sunday night in the AFC championship game, it rocked.

Several Steelers in every phase had a hand in it, but it was the Pittsburgh defense that kicked the game into rapid gear. It produced signature plays in each half that were the axis of Pittsburgh's 24-19 win over the Jets before the largest crowd ever at Heinz Field (66,662).

It was the defense that punched Pittsburgh's Super Bowl XLV ticket.
