UFC: The Ultimate Fighter 13: Dana White and Stephan Bonnar Discuss Episode 1

Season 13 of The Ultimate Fighter debuted on Spike TV on Wednesday and TheUltimateFighter.com has released the first edition of The Aftermath.

The Aftermath is hosted by Stephan Bonnar, finalist from season one of The Ultimate Fighter.

Bonnar sits down with UFC president Dana White to discuss this much anticipated season of TUF, which features two teams of welterweights.

The teams consist of seven fighters each, with one team being coached by former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar and the other by highly ranked contender Junior dos Santos.

Early on, Bonnar clues the viewer in that this will not be an uptight or reserved show as he takes a shot at another season one TUF alumnus Josh Koscheck, stating that Koscheck is "just a prick at heart."

The first question posed to White is how difficult was it to get Lesnar to sign on for an extended time in Vegas. White replies that it was not very difficult to get Lesnar to coach this season of TUF.

White also dispels the rumor that editing has an impact on how fighters and coaches appear on the show, "No one's made to look a certain way," White said. "Ken Shamrock came off the way he did because that's how Ken Shamrock acted. You know how bad you got to **** up to be the bad guy when Tito's the other coach?"

Bonnar and White go on to deliver an entertaining interview that covers a number of topics, some related to TUF and some not.

Could Stone Cold Steve Austin Corral Missing Bronx Zoo Cobra? Did the Texas Rattlesnake wrangle an Egyptian Cobra? Mere hours after asking Stone Cold Steve Austin if he could corral the Egyptian cobra that's been missing from the Bronx Zoo for nearly a week, NBC broke the news that the snake had been found and is now in quarantine.

Coincidence? Or did the WWE legend put a Stone Cold Stunner on the renegade snake?

During an interview about his role as host on USA's 'Tough Enough' (Mon., 11PM ET, USA), we posed the question to him: Could the Texas Rattlesnake take down the Bronx Zoo cobra?

NFL Draft 2011: Chargers Workout Offensive Line Prospect

Chargers Take a Look at Baylor's Danny Watkins in Preparation for 2011 NFL Draft

According to Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post Danny Watkins, the 6'3" and 310 pound guard from Baylor, is going to have a private workout with the San Diego Chargers.

Despite playing tackle at Baylor Watkins in universally considered one of the best interior offensive linemen in the 2011 NFL Draft.

His stock has been on a steady incline since the end of the college football season. He had an impressive Senior Bowl and solid NFL Combine.

If the Chargers are going to draft Watkins they would likely have to do so with their first pick as he projects to be a late first or early second round selection.

The No. 18 overall selection held by the Chargers would be a bit of a reach.

Watkins is an interesting prospect for many reasons.

Watkins grew up playing rugby and hockey in his native Canada.

"I played hockey and rugby in high school. ...Never really watched football." Watkins was quoted in by Wilson in the above linked article. "When you're 270 pounds in the 12th grade, there weren't many players in the NHL that size."

No, there certainly aren't many men that size playing hockey. Although it would certainly pique some interest.

After high school Watkins moved to California to pursue a career as a firefighter. That is when he found football, and he began playing a Butte Community College. He transferred to Baylor after two years.

And this winding road to the NFL draft means that Watkins is going to be old in rookie terms as he is currently 26.

He probably also isn't going to be a Charger, but if he is available when they make their second pick?mid-20's or not?he is worth it.

Rudy Gay leaves it late as Memphis Grizzlies defeat Miami Heat

? Gay lands buzzer-beater to end Memphis's losing streak
? Toronto Raptors land Peja Stojakovic in five-man trade

Rudy Gay landed a 15-foot buzzer-beater over LeBron James to end the Memphis Grizzlies' five-game losing streak with a 97-95 win over Miami Heat on Saturday.

Zach Randolph led the Grizzlies (5-9) with 21 points and 13 rebounds, Mike Conley had 16 points and Gay added 15 as Memphis snapped the Heat's three-game winning streak.

"This was the most unified we've been," said Grizzlies head coach Lionel Hollins. "That's how you win tough, close games, everybody rooting for each other, everybody picking each other up."

It was a tight contest throughout with the teams trading the lead constantly in a back-and-forth second half.

"That's a tough loss," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "We just could not find a way to get over the hump."

James and Chris Bosh carried the Heat (8-5) in the absence of Dwyane Wade, who did not play due to a left wrist injury. James scored a game high 29 points and added 11 assists while Bosh scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds.

Eddie House came off the bench to score 20 points, including six three-pointers, but there was more bad news for the Heat when the forward Udonis Haslem collided with Randolph late in the third quarter and was carried off the court.

"It's huge," James said of Haslem's injury. "He's like our heart of our team. He's our power. He's our pride. He brings everything every night. Size never really matters to him. He always plays above his height, plays above his weight."

The New Orleans Hornets and the Toronto Raptors completed a five-player trade featuring the former All Star Peja Stojakovic on Saturday.

The Hornets acquired the point guard Jarrett Jack, Australian center David Andersen and guard Marcus Banks from the Raptors in exchange for the guard Jerryd Bayless and Stojakovic as well as cash considerations.

"We are excited about the players acquired today and feel that our short-term and long-term goals will benefit from this move," said the Hornets general manager Dell Demps.

"Peja has been a valued contributor as a Hornet for years and we wish both Peja and Jerryd all the best in their future and thank them for their recent contributions in helping us get off to a strong start."

Stojakovic is in his 13th season in the NBA, averaging double figures in scoring in all but one season with a career best of 24.2 points a game in 2003-04 when he was selected as a second-team All-Star. In six games this season he has averaged 7.5 points.

NFL Draft 2011: Defensive Will Be No. 1 Priority for the Pittsburgh Steelers

Is a Defensive Linemen Destined to Land With the Pittsburgh Steelers at Pick No. 31?

The Steelers biggest needs are at corner back, defensive line and on the offensive line.

But as the veteran defense gets a year older?I expect the Steelers to use their 31st overall pick to inject some youth on that side of the ball.

Walterfootball.com projects a DE going to Pittsburgh:

"General manager Kevin Colbert takes the best players on his board, but the top prospects available are running backs, wide receivers and 4-3 personnel.

The best player who makes sense for the Steelers is Aaron Williams. Williams is a better fit for Pittsburgh's defense than Brandon Harris, and he can play free safety in addition to cornerback. So, if he fails at corner, he could always replace Ryan Clark down the road (think Antrel Rolle)."

Williams is certainly a possibility, but what about DT Stephen Paea from Oregon St?

The biggest story of the Combine may have been the incredible achievement of Paea. He set the all-time record in the bench press showing off his super human strength.

Paea won the 2010 Morris Award for the top defensive lineman in the Pac-10 after winning the award in '09 as well. He recorded 45 tackles, including 10 tackles for loss and six sacks in only his fifth season as a football player.

I think getting a raw guy like Paea is a great move for Pittsburgh. He can learn under the vets with little pressure to perform until two or three years down the road.

Will Ayda Field or Faye Resnick Join 'Real Housewives of Beverly Hills'?

Real Housewives of Beverly HillsWhen 'The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills' returns for a season 2, there will be a new face. No, not because of plastic surgery -- the show is adding a new cast member.

However, the new lady isn't replacing Camille Grammer. The former Mrs. 'Frasier' will be back for another go. According to E! Online, Bravo is looking at two ladies: Faye Resnick and Ayda Field.

Viewers will remember Resnick for her role in the O.J. Simpson trial, her Playboy appearance and of course, the "dinner party from hell" that took place during season 1 of 'Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.'

2011 MLB Preseason Preview: Tampa Bay Rays

Tampa Bay Rays (2010 record: 96-66)

Everyone thinks the Rays will take a significant step backwards in 2011, but I am not so sure those people are right. Tampa is one of the best-run organizations in baseball, and I think they have the young horses needed to minimize the impact of the losses of veterans Crawford, Garza and Pena. While I don’t believe they can make a playoff run, I think it’s likely they will remain competitive as they re-tool both the lineup and rotation.

As I expected, the front office signed Johnny Damon and Manny Ramirez to reasonable contracts, thereby minimizing the impact of the loss of their own free agents. Those deals will enable Matt Joyce to serve as the right fielder and Ben Zobrist to return to the infield, either at first or second base. (I know that won’t be how the season begins, but it will likely be how it ends). RHP Jeremy Hellicksen will provide a close approximation of the stats lost by the trade of Matt Garza. Prospect Desmond Jennings will remind fans of a young version of Carl Crawford when he finally arrives at mid-season. Did the team take a step backwards, yes… does it have to be catastrophic, probably not.

The Rays, like the Twins before them, have proven that a small market team can compete with their big-market brethren with a sharp front office, good scouting, and a supportive ownership.

Notable Additions: LF Johnny Damon, RHP Kyle Farnsworth, RHP Joel Peralta, DH Manny Ramirez

Notable subtractions: LF Carl Crawford, 1B Carlos Peña, SS Jason Bartlett, RP Rafael Soriano, RP Joaquin Benoit, RP Lance Cormier*, RP Dan Wheeler, RP Randy Choate, RP Grant Balfour*, RP Chad Qualls*, C Dioner Navarro, DH Brad Hawpe, IF Willy Aybar*, RHP Matt Garza

The offense

Catcher: John Jaso

Infield: Dan Johnson (1B), Sean Rodriguez (2B), Reid Brignac (SS) and Evan Longoria (3B)

Outfield: Johnny Damon (LF), BJ Upton (CF) and Ben Zobrist (RF)

Designated Hitter: Manny Ramirez

Jaso is not much of an option in a fantasy baseball league, unless you use OBP instead of BA, because he won’t hit for much power or drive in a lot of runs (he’ll hit in the bottom of the batting order, thereby losing rbi-opportunities). But the Rays’ brain trust likes him because he will get on base and play decent defense. He sported a ridiculously high walk rate (15%) last year that enabled him to garner the fourth-highest OBP among catchers with at least 400 ABs, ahead of such notables as Buster Posey and Victor Martinez. And he may have a double-digit home run season in that bat.

Ramirez is no longer the offensive force he once was, and while he won’t be the “heart-of-the-order” producer we have been accustomed to seeing, he can still be a productive offensive contributor. Last year, he had the second-best OBP (.409) among outfielders in either league (a whisker behind Josh Hamilton, at .411). Health could be the big issue for Manny – he can’t contribute to your offensive stats if he isn’t on the playing field. From all reports, he arrived at spring training in terrific shape… after health, the next question is whether he will stay interested if and when the Rays fall out of the pennant race. He’ll post a well-above-average batting average because he still makes solid contact (77%) and compiles a plus hit-rate (35% +/-). He should have plenty of rbi-opportunities and score a fair share runs… it seems safe to plan on .290, 18 HR, 75 RBI and 75 R.

Johnson is one of those Four-A players, in my opinion – too good for the minor leagues but not quite good enough for prime time. He had a brutal season for Yokohama (NPB) in 2009 and returned to the US last year with a typically strong campaign in Triple-A… but he again struggled mightily after his promotion to Tampa (.198, 2 HR and 4 RBI in 111 AB). No one knows what to expect from him in The Show in 2011… he could be a huge bust or a REALLY pleasant surprise.

Rodriguez splits suggest he will end up in a platoon situation – if he is lucky. He doesn’t hit right-handers especially well (.229), but can hold his own against lefties (.292). While he has excellent power, his contact rate (72%) leaves something to be desired. With such a poor contact rate, his batting average is at the mercy of his hit-percentage… if it should fall from the low-30s (last year) into the high-20s (his typical percentage in the minors), he could find himself watching Ben Zobrist from the bench.

Longoria, 25, has established himself as one of the most valuable players in baseball. His batting average and on-base percentage have increased each year, and his OPS has been remarkably consistent during his three years in The Show (between .874 and .879). He has won consecutive Gold Glove Awards (posting UZR/150s of 12.4 and 16.9) and while he did not repeat as a Silver Slugger Award winner last year, he was the only third baseman in baseball to hit at least .290, with 20+ HR, 100+ RBI, 95+ R and 15+ SB. The question at this point is how productive he will be with the changes in the lineup around him. Johnny Damon won’t set the table like Crawford, but while Manny isn’t the power threat he used to be, he should provide more protection than Pena – so the changes could balance out. Longoria will have to stay within himself and not try to do too much… so patience will be the key.

Is Brignac still a prospect, or has become suspect? His minor league peripherals suggest to me that he was never much of a prospect. In both the minor leagues and major leagues, his strikeout rate has been above well league average, while his contact rate, hit rate and walk rate were below league average. If his hit rate should regress toward his career levels, you can expect he will hit .220-.230 – which will result in quite a bit of bench time.

Damon had what was arguably the worst year of his professional career last year. He set a career low in stolen bases, and came close to establishing career lows in batting average, home runs, ribbies and runs scored. This happened in spite of the fact that his peripherals were largely consistent with recent years (BABIP, contact rate, hit rate, walk rate). Some pundits chalked up his struggles to Comerica Park, but he actually hit better there than on the road last year. It may be that age has finally caught up with him… if he struggles he’ll play half of the season as Jennings does his final prep work in Triple-A.

Upton’s physical tools are extraordinary, but it is clear that his 2007 season is an outlier brought on by an absurdly-high 40 percenthit rate. His ratios have settled into a normalized pattern, so we are seeing the real BJ Upton at this point. His contact rate has averaged 71 percent and his hit rate has averaged 31 percent over the last two seasons… producing a batting average of .239 over the biennium. He walks more than the league average, but he is increasingly unable to make contact (his K-rate has increased in each of the last three years – 20.9 percent, 24.3 percent, 26.9 percent). At a given point, the word “potential” starts to mean less and less.

Zobrist offers a stable skill set. He has averaged an 80 percent contact rate, while performing considerably better than major league average in both strikeout and walk rates. His hit rate has averaged 29 percent in the major leagues (or in his major league equivalents)… that number should improve a few ticks. There is some nice upside here, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he progressed towards his 2009 performance in the upcoming season.

The pitching staff

Rotation: LHP David Price, RHP James Shields, RHP Jeremy Hellickson, RHP Jeff Niemann, RHP Wade Davis

Closer: RHP Kyle Farnsworth

The five starters had a combined 3.96 ERA last season, which would have been good for first in the division.

Price has outstanding skills, but his metrics indicate that much of his success last year was due to good fortune. He has consistently posted hit-rates in the high-20s (28 percent in 2010) early in his career, so that may be the norm for him and should not serve to discount his skills in any analysis. But his strand rate (79 percent) is ridiculously high… and that fact is reflected in his xERA (which is almost a run higher than his actual number).

Many pundits are proclaiming that Shields will have a big rebound season due to the belief his HR/FB rate (14 percent) skewed all of his numbers in 2010, but I’m not among the people who feel Shields is headed for a HUGE rebound. The peripherals indicate his performance will improve, but it says here he will struggle to get his ERA close to 4.00.

Hellickson was the top pitching prospect in baseball for most of last season. After going 12-3, with a 2.45 ERA and 1.17 WHIP, he earned a promotion to Tampa and went 4-0, with a 3.47 ERA and 1.10 WHIP. His repertoire includes five pitches, all of which he can throw for strikes on a consistent basis. He is an elite pitcher in the making and will offset the loss of Garza. He will be the AL Rookie of the Year… take it to the bank.

Niemann started well last year, but after suffering a shoulder strain mid-season he limped home and into the off-season. He is not as good as his first-half numbers or as bad as the second-half stats. His pre-break ERA (2.80) was based on an unsustainable hit rate (24 percent) and an impossibly high strand rate (81 percent)… his second-half ERA (7.69) largely resulted from a minuscule strand rate (57%) and a sizable increase in his walk rate. Assuming he will progress towards MLB-average statistics, his ERA should be closer to 4.20 in 2011.

Davis is a nice pitcher for what he is – a 5th starter. He pitches to contact, his K-BB ratio was 1.8 (well below the 2.5 that I prefer in a starting pitcher), and his GO/AO was just a 0.78. It says here that he’ll win 13 games – tops – and post a 4.20 ERA and 1.40 WHIP.

With the mass defections of relievers via free agency and JP Howell still sidelined by last May’s labrum surgery, the closer’s role will be filled by either Farnsworth or Joel Peralta when the season gets underway. They don’t inspire confidence, but rookie southpaw Jake McGee could be ready to assume the job by mid-season. The bullpen will be a work in progress – it won’t be as effective as last year, but I don’t think it will be a disaster either. Assuming Howell or McGee end up as closer, the other plus Farnsworth and Peralta give the club a decent relief corps.

Prediction for 2011: 3rd place (85-77)

With all of the losses the club experienced this year, there is a tendency to overlook this team, but I think such thinking is folly. The front office has built an excellent business model which allows them to compete with divisional rivals Boston and New York despite having far less in terms of financial resources. Hellickson, Jennings and McGee will go a long way to replace Garza, Crawford and Soriano by the start of next season… and because of the prospects they have in the upper minors (see below), they will not slide very far before regrouping.

—————————————-

Top Five Prospects

1. Jeremy Hellickson, RHP
2. Matt Moore, LHP
3. Desmond Jennings, OF
4. Jake McGee, LHP
5. Josh Sale, OF

Hellickson is going to be an outstanding big league pitcher. He was a fourth-round pick out of high school (Des Moines, IA) back in 2005 and has been brought along slowly. It is an approach that is about to pay huge dividends. He had an excellent season in Triple-A (Durham) in 2009, and followed that up with an even-more-outstanding campaign last year (12-3, 2.45). He then went 4-0, 3.47, in ten games (four starts) in the major leagues at the end of the season.

His best pitch is his changeup, which rates a “70” on the scouts 20-80 scale. He throws it in the low-80s and with great depth, giving him an excellent out pitch against left-handed hitters. It serves as a nice complement to his repertoire of three fastballs: a four-seamer he throws in the low-to-mid 90 and keeps low in the strike zone, a two-seamer that is a tick slower but that gives a different look to the four-seamer, and a cutter that is still a work in progress. The four-seamer doesn’t move very much, but the others both have pretty good movement. He also has a slighty-above-average curveball that he throws for strikes… but the pitch could use some refinement.

He mechanics are outstanding. He has a clean repeatable delivery. He throws all of his pitches from the same arm angle, increasing the deceptiveness of his offerings. He should develop into the No. 2 guy in the rotation by the end of the season.

Carmelo Anthony: New York Should Be Amar'e's Team, Not Anthony's

Carmelo Anthony Was Huge As New York Downed New Jersey Last Night, But Are the Knicks His Team?

Last night was Carmelo Anthony's best game in a New York uniform.

Anthony, the object of the Knicks' desire for months, dropped 39 points in a 120-116 win over the New Jersey Nets last night. New York needed every point as Amar'e Stoudemire sat on the bench in foul trouble.

After the performance, Tim Smith of the New York Daily News made a bold proclamation.

"Anthony is now the leader of the Knicks," Smith writes. "He is The Man, and it didn't take a 128-foot billboard a few blocks from the Garden to tell us that. It took him putting together back-to-back 39-point, 10-rebound games during which he was spectacular at both ends of the court. All of this was done while a tired Amar'e Stoudemire was saddled with foul trouble and watched most of that third-quarter comeback from the Knicks' bench.

"It feels good, especially right now," Anthony said. "It's a good time that it's happening, must-win situations, games we really need coming down the stretch to get into the playoffs. It's almost the perfect time for me to get into a groove like this.""

I'm sorry, but no, Anthony is not, and should not be the leader of this team. Stoudemire is the one who embraced New York when no one would. He's the one who attacked the task of being a leader when people questioned his ability to do so. Furthermore, he's the one who put this team on his back for the early part of the season and kept the Knicks in playoff contention.

Stoudemire is tired because Mike D'Antoni ran him into the ground night after night in the early part of the season. Despite that fatigue on the court, he's the leader of this team on-and-off of it. Anthony isn't going to answer the tough questions, he doesn't rally his teammates the way Stoudemire has this season and he hasn't shown leadership abilities anywhere other than on the box score.

While Anthony may steal headlines by dropping point after point in big games, it's Stoudemire's team. It has been since he signed on the dotted line last summer, and no trade is ever going to change that. How did Anthony as the leader work out for the Denver Nuggets?

This is a team that will thrive if the pressure isn't on New York's new star to carry the burden on the court and off of it. Stoudemire will take heat off of Anthony and in the end, the Knicks will be better for it.

Let's not rush to crown Anthony the king of New York just yet.

Meet the Man with the Quilt Made out of Ladies' Underwear

missouri man louis garret made a quilt from women's pantiesThe Hannibal, MO Courier-Post has tracked down a Louisiana, MO man by the name of Louis Garrett, who has made a quilt out of women's panties. Garrett first started this project after seeing a similar one in a magazine and realizing that the panties he dressed up his mannequin collection in could be put to much better use.

Garrett admits that at first, his lady friends were freaked out, but now several of them have donated their highest-quality undergarments (as Garrett won't take anything polyester or that a farm girl would wear), and because of that Garrett says he'll never try to sell his beloved quilt.

He is now hard at work on his second panty quilt.

'Regulate' Remixed for Toy Instruments and Cello

nate dogg regulate remixed with toy instruments and celloNate Dogg may have left this mortal coil (RIP, homie) but his legacy lives on. "Regulate," his '90s megahit with Warren G., is the internet's favorite Nate Dogg joint -- the Wikipedia article (also RIP, unfortunately) proves that. So, of course, some YouTubers grabbed their toy instruments and a cello and remixed N-a-t-e and Warren-to-the-G with a cutesy new backing track.

Would the late Mr. Dogg himself approve? I didn't have the pleasure of knowing him personally, but I'd guess he's probably smiling down on these musicians from a cloud (of marijuana smoke) as we speak.

UFC 132: Carlos Condit Ready and Willing to Step in Against B.J. Penn

Jon Fitch and B.J. Penn were scheduled to meet for the second time after their UFC 127 fight on February 27. However, it has been disclosed that Fitch has had to pull out of the fight due to an injury he sustained, therefore leaving Penn without an opponent for July 2.

Carlos Condit, the last ever WEC Welterweight Champion, tweeted "It would be an honor to fight a legend like BJ Penn, one of my favorite fighters ever. If the call comes, I would take the fight in a second."

A fight between the two would definitely be entertaining and something that would be a good replacement for the fight that was supposed to take place. Condit, who went a perfect 5-0 in the WEC before the WEC Welterweight class was dissolved into the UFC, is a credible threat to anyone. Going 26-5 overall in his MMA career, his most recent win came over Dan Hardy via KO due to punches on October 16, 2010 at UFC 120.

Penn, who went to a draw with Fitch back in February, was making his return to the Welterweight division after coming off two straight losses to Frankie Edgar for the Lightweight Championship. Penn has had success at Welterweight, winning the title back in November of 2003 against the reigning and defending Matt Hughes, who was almost unstoppable at that point in his career.

It will be interesting to see the direction the UFC takes for this main event fight is scheduled to take place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. A fight between Penn and Condit is sure to be explosive.

James Durbin Brings the Fire to His Elton John Performance on 'American Idol' (VIDEO)

James Durbin, 'American Idol'There is no debate that James Durbin is the hardest rocking vocalist on 'American Idol' (Wed., 8PM on FOX) this season. Week after week, he's proven he can wrap his big voice around anything. So how did he up the ante for Elton John week?

Tackling "Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)," Durbin took a huge risk. In 'Idol' seasons past, stylized songs with repetitive lyrics like that haven't led to the best performances, but Durbin managed to make it work. He also jumped around the stage and added some unexpected elements to spark the performance.

We certainly didn't see the piano fire coming, but by then we were fully immersed in this rock experience. Like Jennifer Lopez said, "When you're up there, I forget that it's a competition show. I think I'm at a show."

'American Idol' airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8PM ET on FOX.

Brock Lesnar vs. JDS: TUF 13 on Spike TV?Dana White Knows Hyperbole

Whoa there captain, the talent level on the show most certainly has NOT improved from season to season. In fact, given the exploits of those earlier casts, you could argue the fighters were never better than they were in the initial offerings.

Of course, the competitors have probably gotten younger and less experienced, which means we still need to give them time to hit their full potential.

Nevertheless, check the series? Wikipedia page and you can see the most notable successes have come out of Seasons 1-4. The most recent installments have featured superlative coaching talent and a handful of up-and-comers who could foreseeably make big waves in their respective divisions.

But they?ve also been populated by some relative incompetents or clowns who really had no interest in the non-reality television aspects of the show i.e. they wanted to get their faces on television and act the fool to try to extend their 15 minutes.

2011 NFL Mock Draft: Vikings to Decide Between Jake Locker and Ryan Mallett

Minnesota Needs to Find a Quarterback Now

No. 12 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Jake Locker, QB, Washington

The Brett Favre saga is now over in Minnesota and longtime backup Tarvaris Jackson is also expected to leave ? this means it?s time for a reboot.

Minnesota needs to take a long look at their quarterback position and address it via the draft or free agency.  Aside from Locker and Mallett, it?s been rumored that the Vikings are scouting other signal-callers such as Colin Kaepernick, Ricky Stanzi and Christian Ponder.

But when it?s all said and done, Locker will be the pick for Minnesota.

According to Rob Rang of CBSSPorts.com: ?Though there are plenty of teams knocking Locker's inaccuracy, he does have believers sprinkled throughout the league. Sources tell me the Vikings may be one of them and are more likely to take Locker over Arkansas' Ryan Mallett.?

The Vikings are one of Locker?s believers.  After the horrific play by Brett Favre at the position last year, even Locker?s college career 55.4 completion percentage may not be a bad option for them at this point.

Todd McShay of ESPN had this to say about Locker: "Love, love Jake Locker the competitor. Love the physical tools. Tremendous athlete, obviously. He wants it. He makes accurate throws at times. He just hasn't put it together. ..The most important thing you have to do is be accurate. He's not accurate now and he's not showing signs over the last year of becoming more accurate."

Although Locker lacks the accuracy that teams want in a quarterback, he makes up for with his intensity on the field and athleticism.  In fact, Locker posted the fastest 40 yard time at the combine ? faster than even Cam Newton.

After a solid pro day performance the University of Washington, where he complete 38-of-40 passes, Locker may have just proven that his accuracy can improve given more work and coaching.

Liverpool FC: Top Five Goalkeepers of All Time

To build a successful team, any team requires a consistent goalkeeper.

And one of the reasons that Liverpool has been as successful as it has been over the past 50 years is the great keepers that Liverpool has been fortunate enough to have at different points of time.

A goalkeeper typically has a longer time at the top level than players at other positions, and to be considered to be one of the best ever at a club as illustrious as Liverpool, a goalkeeper would be required to spend a significant amount of time at the club.

Hence, the list only considers the goalkeepers who have made over 150 appearances for the Reds.

Two criteria have been used to rank the goalkeepers—The ratio of clean sheets per game and the number of goals conceded per game, and not surprisingly, both the rankings give us similar results.

2011 NFL Draft: Philadelphia Eagles Prospect, Iowa Defensive End Adrian Clayborn

In the 2010 NFL draft, the Eagles traded up to the 13th overall selection to draft Michigan defensive end Brandon Graham.  After being named the opening-day starter, Graham eventually lost his spot to Juqua Parker.  Graham played pretty well for a rookie, but failed to put up the kind of numbers fans hoped he would during his 2010 campaign.  To make things worse, he had his season ended early due to an ACL injury.

In 2011, could the Eagles go after another defensive end in the first round?  There are a lot of talented defensive ends who will end up being taken in the first round.  One of them is Iowa defensive end Adrian Clayborn.

Clayborn stands at 6’3”, 281 pounds, so he's a bit bigger than the defensive ends the Eagles typically look for.  However, Clayborn is able to use his size to his advantage in his style of play.  He loves to use his hands to get into a blocker and dictate which way he'd like to go.  This makes him very solid against the run.

He's not the quickest player, and from what I've seen, he doesn't get off the ball too fast.  However, he is able to quickly hold his ground when engaged and keeps his eyes in the backfield.  Once he has an understanding of the play, he is able to use his strength to throw away blockers and begin his pursuit.

Something I think he'll have to work on more if he wants to be a star in the NFL is his technique.  In college, he was able to rely a lot on his strength and athleticism to beat blockers and make plays in the backfield.  It won't be as easy in the NFL, as he'll see much more talented blockers.

Clayborn's prospect status diminished a bit over the course of his senior season as he wasn't able to match the phenomenal numbers he put up his junior year.  In 2009, he registered 63 tackles and 11 sacks.  In 2010, he registered 52 tackles and just four sacks.

Clearly, you have to factor the extra attention he received his senior year after really putting himself on the map as a junior.  He was still a disruptive force as a senior, so I really don't buy too much into him having a "down" year.

Again, I have to say that Clayborn is a little bit of a different player than the Eagles typically look for at defensive end.  However, he's a solid player, and I think he could be used effectively in the Eagles system.

Clayborn has the ability to line up on the edge and be a great run stopper, but is versatile enough to move into the middle as a pass rusher, something the Eagles like to do with their defensive ends.

An additional tidbit on Clayborn involves his status for the NFL draft.  There has been a lot of talk about draft prospects boycotting attending the NFL draft.  However, Clayborn has said that he received an invite to the draft and will indeed attend.

Below, view highlights of Clayborn against Ohio State.

Kobe Bryant: Should He Start Resting Down the Stretch Before Playoffs?

There are only nine games left for the Los Angeles Lakers this season, and the question on every Laker fan's mind is:

Is it time to start resting Kobe Bryant for the big finish?

I thought about it for a while weighing the benefits of both courses of action, and realized that the correct answer may not be the most obvious one. When it comes to resting important players, it's usually a good idea. The odds are that this star player has been carrying a large bulk of the load all season long now, and it wouldn't be a terrible thing for him to catch a breather. If you add to that a record like the one the Lakers have, it may seem obvious that this star should sit out a while. I feel like this couldn't be more wrong for Kobe Bryant however, and here's why.

The first thing you have to think about is the Lakers' current record. It's deceptive because while being good, the Lakers are still trying to fend off the Mavericks for the second playoff spot, and could also possibly overtake the Spurs for the number one spot in the West. No one thought the Lake show would have a chance at the top honors this year, but with the Spurs slipping like they have been lately, anything is possible with nine games still left on the schedule. If you look to the Eastern Conference, the Lakers still have to work hard in order to ensure home-court advantage no matter what should they make the finals this year.

If you start resting Kobe Bryant now, maybe nothing will happen. Maybe the Lakers will band together and allow Kobe to get some much needed rest. They may also tank a few straight games, risk losing home court against the East, and could slip to the third spot in the West. I'm not sure what Dr. Buss has in mind, but that's not something I would want to risk with the Lakers on a roll like they are. You can certainly shave a few minutes off his nightly assignment, but in no way, shape or form should they sit him.

Now you're thinking I'm crazy right?

Don't I know how injured and tired and yadda yadda Kobe Bryant is? Of course I do people, but Kobe Bryant is not the average player. Most "professional athletes" sit out if they have a stomach ache. Kobe plays with fractures, sprains, pains, bruises, the flu and on down the list. The Lakers have plenty of home cooking left in their schedule before the playoffs, and Kobe will be on the mend the entire time. The one thing that Kobe has made me certain of is that he can take care of himself. This being the case, I'm not worried.

And now the most important reason not to bench the Black Mamba...the dude is on a roll!

If you have seen a Laker game recently, you would know that Kobe has already flipped the switch to "playoff mode." He is becoming much more aggressive and taking the offense into his own hands early and often. Once Kobe has flipped the switch, it's best not to mess with him. He's officially in another state of mind, and bothering that could jeopardize everything. The Laker squad needs him the way he is now so they can be assured he will close games out when they matter the most. One thing is for sure, if you rest Kobe now, you never know how he will come back in the postseason.

There is always a chance that none of these things would happen, and Kobe would return fully charged with the same great mindset. The Lakers could close out the season well, getting enough wins to keep the second seed, or even grab top Western honors. Kobe's ailments could heal nicely, allowing him more lift on his shot and speed in his step. I'm aware that all of this is possible, and more.

But let me ask you this: Why risk it?

He looks good to go in my opinion, so keep him on a roll. The playoffs are right around the corner now, and the Black Mamba needs to stay on the court in order to hit the postseason running.

College Football 2011: Should There Be Stiffer Penalties for off Field Trouble?

Whether it is a slap on the wrist or a smack to the face, penalties handed down to players and coaches by the NCAA for off the field troubles have been rather inconsistent through the years.

Grabbing headlines the past few months have been the violations by several Ohio State players and their coach Jim Tressel.  While Terrell Pryor and his four partners in crime were handed a somewhat sweet deal by the NCAA (allowing them to play in the Sugar Bowl, but suspending them for the first five games in 2011), how the NCAA’s Committee on Infractions (COI) deals with Tressel could be much more lethal.

What started as a two game suspension by the school was later increased to five by Tressel in hopes to gain some sympathy from the COI.  But even if the NCAA decides to make an example of Tressell like they did to Tennessee’s Bruce Pearl, do coaches and players deserve to receive these stiff penalties for actions that are most likely happening on campuses across the nation and are really unrelated to the game itself?

To be fair, the NCAA has a difficult job governing the very vague line between a paid and amateur athlete.

In the case of USC and Reggie Bush, the line seemed to be crossed mainly because Bush was receiving gifts, cars and other tangible material from people around town just for being that magnetic on-field star.  These benefits appeared to be ways around paying a player to be a spokesperson for their product.

However, with the boys at Ohio State, they were not given money just because they played for the most popular team in Ohio.  They sold items to a Tattoo Parlor that they earned themselves for playing in a BCS bowl game.

These items were technically their personal property. They should be able to do whatever they wanted with those items.  Instead of holding onto them as keepsakes, they elected to sell it to someone who understood their monetary value and was willing to pay the market price.

Is it really that much different if they did the same thing a few months after graduation?

Although Tressel knew about this transaction way before the NCAA found out about it, their actions by his players can really seem like a non-issue when looked at realistically.  The fact that he supposedly hid this from the NCAA raises some concerns, but it is not like he was paying recruits to come to Ohio State to play. He basically turned a blind eye to something that should not have been that big of deal.

People are always interested in seeing stiffer penalties handed down by the NCAA, especially fans of those teams that got the brunt end of a ruling in the past.  But, in reality, the penalty needs to fit the crime and this is something that the NCAA seems to have troubles with.

If a player blatantly takes money or gifts from a another person giving absolutely nothing in return, this transaction should be construed as an amateur player being paid and he should be suspended to the full extent of the NCAA bylaws.

However, if a player decides to sell a game ball handed to him by his coach on Ebay to the highest bidder, this hardly seems like an issue that the NCAA should be able to govern.

The issue with Dez Bryant last year proves even further the point that the NCAA gets a little suspension happy when these cases cross their desk.  Bryant did absolutely nothing wrong by meeting with Deion Sanders for lunch, but the fact that he concealed it from the NCAA apparently warranted a 10-game suspension.

Does that seem like justice?  A player who was ignorant to the rules didn’t actually break one, but gets suspended like he did.

This penalty for concealment of information to the NCAA could end up hurting Tressel once the COI makes a decision on his case.  Yet, if the NCAA does bring the pain to Tressel, will it really scare other coaches into revealing issues that they think that are borderline, but could hurt their team if they bring them to the forefront.

The NCAA seems to believe that stiffer penalties will get the point across to others who are thinking about breaking these amateur rules, but only when it benefits their end plan. As each season moves along, there seems to be more and more issues that arise with players tap dancing around these rather vague laws.

The landscape of college football is constantly changing and the fact that it has become the second most popular sport in the nation means that these issues with keeping these players as amateurs will get exponentially more difficult.

Some people believe that paying players is the logical next step for college football.  Others think that the integrity of the game needs to be kept intact by maintaining the amateur status of these players.

Either way, it has become obvious that college football players are becoming more famous than in years past and laying down stiffer penalties for monetary violations does not seem to be working.  Does anyone really think Reggie Bush, Dez Bryant and Terrell Pryor suffered (or are going to suffer) from the sanctions handed to them?

When it comes down to brass tacks, the NCAA is making a ton of money off of these players.  While they may be making an example of these players that break their rules, they can’t hide the fact that these penalties only conceal the absurd amount of money the NCAA makes off the 1,000s of other college football players that follow their laws to a "T".

In the long run, it won’t matter how stiff of penalties the NCAA comes up with. These violations will keep occurring until players receive some sort of compensation for the stadiums that they pack for these schools every Saturday.

IndyCar Review: Five Things We Learned from Sunday's Race at St. Pete

Sunday's season opening event at St. Petersburg was filled with a little bit of everything. You had the new rules in place, some aggressive driving, injuries, blocking, good competition and flat out domination all in one race.

Dario Franchitti cruised to an easy victory as he took a seven second lead over runner-up Will Power. Tony Kanaan and Simona de Silvestro had quite a duel in the last half of the race that provided for some great racing, and a lot of controversy. Not to be outdone though, were the drivers who literally couldn't wait to get the season started.

All in all it was a great race, and the ratings were higher than I thought they would be. The next race is scheduled for April 10th at Barber Motorsports Park, for the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama. The race is scheduled to start at 3:00pm.

Here are five things that we learned from Sunday's race that we might not have known before the race began.

We feel confident in stating that 92-year-old Helen B. Staudinger has a million times more spunk and fire than your grandma. Why? The Marion County, Florida woman is now behind bars after shooting at her neighbor's house after he denied her a kiss and asked her to leave his property.

The neighbor, 53-year-old Dwight Bettner, told reporters that Staudinger has made the moves on him several times before. He has a girlfriend, so when Staudinger asked him to lay one on her, he politely declined the offer. The woman was so enraged by his blatant rejection that she marched back to her house, snatched up her semi-automatic, stomped right back over and pulled the trigger a few times.

Staudinger explained to police that she was aiming for his beloved car, but hit the house instead. Bettner was on the phone when her heard the gunshots and was sprayed with glass when one pierced a window.

MLB Preview 2011: Looking at Joakim Soria and the Kansas City Royals on Paper

It's going to be extremely difficult for the Royals to compete this season.

They lost 95 games last year, and lost the likes of Zack Greinke, Yuniesky Betancourt, and Jose Guillen, to boot.

2012 is the target date; several baseball experts have proclaimed that the Royals' farm system is baseball's best in a decade.

It's been 25 years since Kansas City last made the postseason, and they've had just one winning season in the past 16 years.

The future is bright, and patience is a virtue.

Throughout this article, you will see a number between seven and ten beside each player.  These numbers break the players up into essential categories; here's a rough layout.

10: Best player/pitcher in baseball

9-plus: Superstar, MVP/Cy Young Candidates

8-plus: Consistent All-Star

7.5: Periodical All-Star

7.25: Solid Starter

7: Average Player

New England Patriots: Analyzing Recent Mock Draft Selections 17th and 28th

I recently completed my second mock draft, and I have quite the selections for Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots.

At 17th overall, I have New England slotted in as drafting Wisconsin's defensive end J.J. Watt and at 28th selecting Boston College's offensive tackle Anthony Castonzo.

However, I strongly believe that New England will trade their No. 28 selection, but I do not incorporate trades in my mock drafts.

If New England does choose to go down their road, here are two scouting reports on Watt and Castonzo—this is what kind of production you can expect out of the two prospects.
