Arsenal FC: Why Robin Van Persie Can Be the Gunners Saviour in 2011-12

Even by the standard of the past six fruitless years, there is a lot of upheaval and uncertainty surrounding Arsenal as they head into the 2011-12 season.  Influential pair Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri continue to be linked with moves away from the club.  Several underachieving squad players are expected to find new teams and fans still eagerly await the arrival of quality reinforcements.

The performances in 2011 from Dutch forward Robin Van Persie should ease the minds of many Gunners fans. The quality of the former Feyenoord ace remains a certainty and will likely prove pivotal to Arsenal's prospects in this campaign.

Coming off his finest season, Van Persie is rapidly becoming the most crucial element in Arsenal's playing style.  Since the departure of Emmanuel Adebayor in 2009, the Dutchman has blossomed into a complete striker.  His goal scoring prowess in no longer characterised just by wonder strikes.  Arsenal's number 10 is now as dangerous in the box as he is from just outside it.

Whether the creative heart of Arsenal's midfield is present or not in 2011/12, Van Persie will remain vital to the potency of Arsenal's attack.  His clever movement makes him a natural target for the incisive passing of Cesc Fabregas.  He would need to offer a similar outlet if the still developing talents of Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey have to take on more responsibility.

Van Persie's creative flair is something which sets him apart from many other strikers.  His ability to open up a defense in and around the box makes him a perfect link player for Arsenal's bevvy of attacking midfielders.  If Fabregas departs for Barcelona, Van Persie would only need to increase his goal providing output.

In the event that Fabregas or Nasri remain at Arsenal, Van Persie's knack for setting up goal scoring opportunities will continue to benefit two players who are capable of 15 plus goals from midfield.

The fluid style of Van Persie is something Arsenal's tactical structure depends on. The flexibility which allows him to be comfortable playing in wide areas, is vital in encouraging more movement in Arsenal's front three.  Van Persie's ability to operate in a roving, free role needs to be granted more license this season.  This would make it more difficult for opposition defenses to isolate the Holland international and would also create valuable space for other forwards to exploit.

Another reason why Van Persie remains critical to the Arsenal cause is his belief in the club's ideals.  Van Persie has spoken many times about his passion for the way the team plays its football, which speaks volumes about his commitment to helping Arsenal succeed.

His maturation since arriving as a youngster back in 2004, has seen Van Persie develop into a real leader.  These qualities have led to many tipping him to receive the captain's armband in the event of Cesc Fabregas sealing a move home.

With so many already predicting doom and gloom for the Emirates stadium faithful in 2011/12, Arsene Wenger needs to be able to count on the marquee talents of Robin Van Persie.  If he can stay healthy, the Dutchman's clinical finishing, technical class and affinity for Arsenal's values, could help propel the team silverware.
