English amateur Tom Lewis has impressed the field and the fans, all the while climbing up the leaderboard.
Climbing high enough to get himself a share of the lead in fact.
Lewis finished round one at five under par 70 and tied for the lead with professional golfer Thomas Bjorn.
Keep in mind Lewis is an amateur, which means that even if he does win the Open he won?t be able to take any money.
If I were him I would be making the push to go pro as soon as possible.
Yahoo! Sport UK & Ireland has more on Lewis? first round.
The 20-year-old Lewis, who earned a place in the tournament by winning the Local Final Qualifying event at nearby Royal Cinque Ports, scrambled his way to three under par after eight holes thanks to an unerring putting stroke which saw him save every par and grab every opportunity to make a birdie.
Two bogeys in three holes from the 11th appeared to herald a return to reality for Lewis - who was playing alongside five-times champion Tom Watson, the golf legend his father had named him after - but the Welwyn Garden City player then defied expectations with four consecutive birdies from the 14th to get him to five under par.
I?m not sure if Lewis has what it takes to maintain the tie at No. 1, or even hold a lead, especially with a very talented field preparing for round two. As of right now he hasn?t given us any reason to doubt him though.
It would be an incredible story for an amateur to take home the Claret Jug.
