The Daily Mail reports that a cat called Smokey is going for the world record for "loudest cat." Smokey's purrs have been clocked at over 92 decibels, equal to the engine of a Boeing 737's jet engine. The average cat, in comparison, packs a 25 decibel purr. The Guinness Book of World Records does have a category for "loudest cat," but Smokey is their first entry. A spokesperson told the Daily Mail that reaching 80dB would be an "astonishing" feat for a cat, so I'd say they should hand Smokey a certificate right now.
And if Guinness won't cooperate, maybe our friends at The Universal Record Database can certify this awesome accomplishment in purring.
