Casey Anthony Prosecutor Jeff Ashton Offers a Voice of Reason on 'The View' (VIDEO)

Retiring prosecutor Jeff Ashton, one of the principle figures in the Casey Anthony trial, visited 'The View' Wednesday (weekdays, syndicated on ABC) and reflected on yesterday's not-guilty verdict that shocked the nation. Ashton revealed he was troubled by the frenzy surrounding the trial, which he likened to the atmosphere of a sporting event, and said that while the acquittal was disappointing, it has not shaken his faith in the justice system.

Ashton understood why the case struck such a nerve with the public. "I think when people see someone that they believe has so gone away from [a mother's love for her child], it just outrages them," he said. But the outrage got to an unhealthy level, he said. "It actually got weird at times, to where it was almost like a sporting event and people were on a team," he said. "There were times when I wanted to look at them and just say, 'Everybody calm down. It's not a sporting event. It's more than that.'"
