MLB Rumors: Why San Francisco Giants Should Go After Reds' Catcher

MLB rumors have begun to swirl that the San Fransisco Giants are interested in trading for Cincinnati Reds catcher Ramon Hernandez.

Ever since Buster Posey went done for the season in a horrific collision at the plate back in May, the Giants have known they needed to bolster their catching depth to ease the burden off Eli Whiteside. He has dealt with a minor quad injury and his production is less than ideal because of it. Right now he is batting a mere .212 in 99 ABs.

With a 1.5 game lead in the National League West, the potential to repeat as division champs is there for the taking.

So now the Giants are looking to acquire help in a trade to land Hernandez, a move that makes a lot of sense.

The 13-year veteran is enjoying one of his finest seasons offensively. He is currently hitting .307 with eight HR and 20 RBI in 168 ABs.

He is the veteran presence that can bring some sort of consistency to a lineup that is currently 27th out of 30 teams in runs scored. Hernandez has playoff experience from when he was with the Oakland Athletics and could be the next Cody Ross if all goes according to plan.

The Reds have been platooning Hernandez with Ryan Hannigan all season long and the results have been spectacular. As a team the Reds are one of the most productive teams in the majors at the catcher position.

Plus with highly touted prospect Devin Mesoraco performing well in AAA, the Reds could bring him up and not miss a beat.

Despite sitting at a game under .500, the Reds are only four games out of first place in the ultra competitive NL Central.

This means the Reds would be looking for players in return that can help them right now. Considering the rotation has been the root of their first half struggles, the Giants would likely have to part with one of their young hurlers.

The question becomes...how good of a player are the Giants willing to give up for a chance to win back-to-back World Series?
