Blowing the Whistle on 'Whistleblower' Wayne Odesnik's Return

Filed under:

Wayne OdesnikWe use the term whistleblower because it sounds so much more noble than snitch, mole, fink or rat.

But tennis has its own personal doping narc now:

Wayne Odesnik.

You might recall Odesnik is the American player caught smuggling HGH into Australia in January. He was suspended from tennis for two years. But on Wednesday, the International Tennis Federation announced that he would be eligible to play again starting next week, 12 months earlier than expected.

He had provided "Substantial Assistance,'' according to the ITF website, "to the enforcement of professional rules of conduct.''

Rule M.5.3 in the ITF anti-doping program says a player's suspension can be suspended "where the Participant has provided Substantial Assistance to the ITF or other Anti-Doping Organisation, a criminal authority or a professional disciplinary body that results in ... (the ITF) discovering or establishing an anti-doping rule violation by another Person or that results in a criminal authority or disciplinary body discovering or establishing a criminal offence. ...''

Yes, rulebooks are full of mumbo jumbo. So if this was confusing, take it this way:

Odesnik will not only have HGH cheat on his resume from here, but also narc, snitch, mole ...

I mean, whistleblower.

If the ITF is going by its own rules, then Odesnik gave information about another doping violation.

First, Odesnik cheats, and then he apparently sells out others to shorten his punishment? This is not going to go over well with the other players.
