Chris Leben Speaks About His Driving Under The Influence Charge

On Tuesday October 19th of this year, Chris Leben was arrested for suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence.

The charge is not Leben’s first for driving under the influence. In 2008, Leben spent 35 days in jail on a DUI charge. The 2008 incident resulted in his fight with Michael Bisping being rescheduled from UFC 85 to UFC 89. Leben lost the bout to Bisping.

After the fight with Bisping, Leben tested positive for steroids and was banned from the Ultimate Fighting Championship for nine months and fined one third of his purse from the Bisping fight.

Leben described his October 19th arrest, as “stepping on the gas a little to hard” and crashing into a wall. The incident took place in Honolulu.

“Hopefully, mostly likely I'm not going to get charged with a DUI,” said Leben. “Hindsight's 20/20. Yeah, I made a mistake. My blood-alcohol level was never checked. Did I have a few drinks? Yes. Was I hammered? No. Other than that, I'm not saying anything because it's still...it's not finished,"

Leben stated that he refused a breathalyser test because someone once told him he did not need to submit to one, “I guess my lawyer says that's not necessarily the case now, but I didn't blow. I didn't take the test, just because I know that in Hawaii if you get in an accident [the legal blood-alcohol limit is] .05 if there's an accident, not even .08, so it's super-duper low.”

Leben’s court date for the incident is scheduled for February, so it should have no effect on his January 1st fight against Brian Stann at UFC 125. If he defeats Stann he will be on a four-fight UFC winning streak as the court date looms.
