Faryd Mondragon Set to Sign With Philadelphia Union

Filed under:

After a year of turbulence between the posts, the Philadelphia Union believe they finally have their man.

The Union are set to sign Colombian international Faryd Mondragon on a free transfer from Cologne of the German Bundesliga, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

Although the 39-year-old Mondragon is a short-term option, his entrance will likely end the Chris Seitz-Brad Knighton era in Philadelphia. The club left both goalkeepers exposed in November's expansion draft and declined the contract option on Seitz, who is available for the taking in the second stage of the Re-Entry Draft on Wednesday.

Mondragon has started 11 Bundesliga games for Cologne this season while splitting time with 21-year-old Croatian Miro Varvodic. The godfather to former New York Red Bulls striker Juan Pablo Angel's son, Mondragon was originally rumored to be heading to the Big Apple before the speculation changed course.

The 1998 World Cup veteran's imminent departure from Cologne became official Tuesday, when the Associated Press reported the termination of his contract.
