Former Texas Rangers president J. Thomas Schieffer has been appointed by MLB commissioner Bud Selig to run the Los Angeles Dodgers' business and financial operations.
When Commissioner Selig announced last Wednesday that MLB was taking over day-to-day operation of the Los Angeles Dodgers, he said someone would be appointed to oversee the club's finances in the near future.
No timetable has been announced as to when Schieffer would take control, however it is believed that it will be in the next few days.
J. Thomas Schieffer was an investor in the ownership group headed by George W. Bush and Rusty Rose that purchased the Rangers in 1989 and served as president of the Texas Rangers from 1991-1999. Schieffer also served as the Rangers' general partner from November 1994 to June 1998.
In the official press release from Major League Baseball announcing the appointment of Schieffer today Commissioner Selig said:
"We are very fortunate to have someone of Tom Schieffer's stature monitor the operations of the Los Angeles Dodgers on behalf of Major League Baseball. Tom is a distinguished public servant who has represented the nation with excellence and has demonstrated extraordinary leadership throughout his career. The many years that he spent managing the operations of a successful franchise will benefit the Dodgers and Major League Baseball as a whole. I am grateful for Tom's acceptance of this role."
The Dodgers had no immediate reaction to today's announcement.
