Josh Elliott Video A Subtle Hint In Anchor's Terrible Decision?
Maybe I'm biased: I love sports, love to watch sports, love to cover/comment on/write about sports.
Still, isn't it possible that the reason why Josh Elliott was crying during his last few moments on SportsCenter was not because he was "choked up with bittersweet emotions" of leaving his beloved friends and colleagues, but because he realized what a horrible mistake he had just made?
Sure it's only a "sports show," but isn't SportsCenter—especially for an American male in his thirties—is far more culturally significant than Good Morning America or the Today Show?
I'd rather show highlights from the most insignificant sporting event—a WNBA preseason scrimmage or the junior high school curling championships—than ask Kim Kardashian about her new book or one of those Twilight dudes about their next role as a "troubled young teen who finds love in an unexpected place."
I know that GMA and similar shows do occasionally report "real news," but if Elliott wanted to satisfy his inner Tom Brokaw he chose the wrong medium. I don't think Walter Cronkite ever considered cooking up a "breakfast option that's both fun and healthy and fun for the kids" with an overly bubbly guest chef.
I don't have a problem with Elliott leaving SportsCenter for GMA. If he is tired of sports and wants to branch out that's fine. It's his life. But don't try to tell me—as Hannah Storm sort of suggests—that GMA is a "better" gig.
It's not.
Maybe the viewership is larger, and it is "network," ABC instead of ESPN. But children, teens, adults, professionals, even retirees, across America rush to the TV in the morning to catch highlights from the NBA Finals or the back nine at Augusta. No one has ever showed that type of fervor and excitement to see "Robin Roberts and her special, poignant interview with Tony Danza and the cast from Who's The Boss?"
My guess is that Elliott broke down knowing that that was his future instead of getting to broadcast SC live from the Super Bowl or World Series...and the fact that he was announcing his blunder live on camera rather than via press release. But maybe he'll feel better when he gets his first assignment: "Which Hollywood celebrity is showing a baby bump!?"
