Mark Bocek (9-3 with 7 wins by submission) is no slouch, and will stand as one tough unwelcome party to former WEC Lightweight Champion Ben Henderson’s (12-2 with 8 wins by submission) UFC debut tonight in UFC 129: St-Pierre vs. Shields in Toronto.
Bocek, a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), is coming off a Submission of the Night from his last fight in UFC 124 in December 2010, a triangle choke victory made all the more impressive considering it was at the expense of two-time Submission of the Night honoree Dustin Hazelett.
Henderson, himself a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Brown belt, boasts of his own Submission of the Night when he defeated Donald Cerrone by guillotine choke to defend his WEC Lightweight belt in WEC 48 on April 24, 2010.
Previously, he had also beaten Cerrone in a rousing see-saw battle that earned them both Fight of the Night honors in WEC 43 on Oct. 10, 2009.
Unfortunately, his second and last Fight of the Night saw him lose his title, in his last MMA bout.
Worse, he was posterized and KO’d by his conqueror Anthony Pettis with that sensational bounce-off-the-fence flying kick in WEC 53 on Dec.16, 2010.
For Henderson’s first-time display of guts inside the Octagon, Bocek will prove that a UFC contender can give a former WEC champion the fits.
Bocek will upset Henderson and reward the latter with his second consecutive Shame of the Night dishonor.
