WWE Over the Limit 2011: What's Next for Rey Mysterio After Losing to R-Truth?

At WWE Over the Limit on Sunday night, Rey Mysterio came up on the losing end of his match with R-Truth.

Their feud began back on the May 9th edition of Monday Night RAW, when Truth attacked Rey, further building his newfound heat as a heel. This match was their first in-ring confrontation since that night.

I have to say that I, for one, am impressed by a couple of things here.

One, that R-Truth actually went over on Rey Mysterio. A lot of work has been done in putting Truth over since his turn, so it was safe to assume with that being the case, that Truth would start winning from that point on. It makes perfect sense to me.

But, WWE creative does not always seem to follow logic in these cases, so I was doubtful as to whether or not they could follow through. However, Truth did go over, and that is a good thing for his character, and for his place on RAW.

The other bit that really surprised me is that it was a clean pin. While I did believe that Truth should win the match, I did not think it would be without some type of dirty move at the end.

Of course, that would have done little to nothing in terms of legitimizing him as a serious contender, but, again, this is WWE we’re talking about here. So, color me pleasantly surprised.

So, what happens now for Rey Mysterio?

The easy answer is that the feud with Truth is not yet over. After all, these two just got started. They have not even scratched the surface of what this feud could potentially be.

Rey would have every reason to want a second match. He was laid out after the bell by Truth, who hit him in the head with his now infamous water bottle. Rey’s character could accept losing a match, but a cheap shot like this would certainly have him coming back for more.

The fact is, Rey can do a lot for Truth at this point in his push. One match is great. A win for Truth is even better. But, to leave it at that? That may not be the best move.

Good feuds take time to develop. This one had less than a month. Not enough time for fans to truly care about it as much as they could. This match, while evidently used as a benefit for Truth, could be good for both guys.

But if indeed this feud proved to be a "one and done" sort of contest, then Rey’s next opponent seems pretty likely.

Alberto Del Rio has been looking down his nose at Rey Mysterio for several weeks now, and it is only a matter of time before these two hook up in the ring. In fact, it seems to be a foregone conclusion.

Calling Rey a “Chihuahua,” Del Rio’s character seems intent on belittling the popular WWE Superstar at every turn.

Obviously not impressed by Rey’s credentials in WWE, Del Rio is as disrespectful now as he was to Edge a couple of months ago.

But, Del Rio is a heel, and that’s what they do.

I may be in the minority on this, but I was a little surprised to see the recent heat erupt between these two. I believed that perhaps they would be kept away from each other, allowing Del Rio to continue on his path upward, eventually leading him to the WWE Title. After all, Rey is not in title contention at this time, so the only real reason for this feud would be to strengthen Del Rio’s character.

This is eerily beginning to sound like the feud with R-Truth.

Which, leads me to my own personal speculation that perhaps Rey’s role is now becoming the veteran who is used to get over the younger talent.

There is no shame in this role, let me be clear. Only trusted, valuable workers who have earned their spot and are respected by fans, are utilized in this way.

Shawn Michaels was great at working the Superstar on the rise, and helping sell him as the next overnight sensation. It was a role that Shawn enjoyed, because toward the end of his career, he realized it was time to give back. Is Rey now in the same position?

Regardless of what happens next, Rey Mysterio will undoubtedly continue to be one of the most popular WWE Superstars in the company. His next move is anyone’s guess, but his heart and his dedication to business will never be in question.
