2011 Preakness Picks: How Important Is Post Position For Animal Kingdom?

2011 Preakness Picks Will Be Determined By How Each Horse Did During Post Position Draw

The 2011 Preakness Stakes post position draw is set and Animal Kingdom drew post 11. The Kentucky Derby winner is a 2-1 favorite right now, but he will have to contend with a full field of 14 horses this Saturday evening.

Traditionally the No. 11 post hasn't been very conducive to success in this race. In fact, in the 136-year history of the race only two horses have ever won from post 11 - Point Given in 2001 and Display in 1926. Usually I don't like to look at post positions, but that is a really low number considering how many times the race has been run.

While being on the outside is not exactly a kiss of death, it does make Animal Kingdom's hopes for a Triple Crown a little bit more difficult.

From Lane Gold (via ESPN.com):

The key to keeping alive the chase for the ever elusive Triple Crown is not getting caught too wide on the first and final turns. Animal Kingdom will likely be stuck outside on the clubhouse turn, as jockey John Velazquez will try to maneuver his horse into his customary spot in the middle of the pack.

If Velazquez can avoid getting caught behind a wall of horses or floated too far outside on the final turn, then he will be in prime position to win.

The deck is certainly stacked against Animal Kingdom in this race, even more so than in the Derby because the Preakness field is filled with faster horses. If he falls too far behind right out of the gate it will be very difficult for him to win.

This is not a favorable draw in any way and it is going to really hinder his chances of winning this race. He is the favorite because he won the Derby, but he is far from a lock to win the Preakness.
