Strikeforce Dallas: Conor Heun Fights Through Badly Damaged Arm to Gain Victory

Strikeforce Dallas: Conor Heun Fights Through Badly Damaged Arm to Gain Victory

Prior to facing Magno Almeida on Saturday, June 18, Conor Heun had not won a fight since October 2008. Granted, he had only fought twice since that win, but both fights ended in decision losses.

If there was a fighter that needed a win on Saturday's Strikeforce card, it was Heun.

Heun did gain the win (29-28 on all three cards) in a unanimous decision, showing a no-quit attitude and paying a pretty big cost in the process, as his arm appeared to be severely damaged at the end of the fight.

During the second round of the preliminary card fight, Almeida locked on an armbar that looked like it was going to end Heun's night. Almeida was grimacing as he was doing all he could to force Heun to submit, but Heun refused to go gently into the good night and didn't tap. Almeida eventually released the hold.

When the third round finished, and and the fighters stood with the referee, Heun could be seen talking to the referee as he held Heun's right arm, waiting for the decision to be announced.  When the results were read, and the referee raised Heun's arm, he seemed to visibly wince.

After the fight, a very emotional Heun spoke about the win and how he hoped his actions in the cage could be used as an inspiration. Some pretty good stuff from Heun and well worth watching.

If you didn't know Conor Heun before this fight, you should now.

Dallas Mavericks on brink of first NBA title after beating Miami Heat

? Late run gives Dallas 112-103 win over Miami
? LeBron James held to two points in final quarter

The Dallas Mavericks used a storming late run to move to the brink of their first NBA title with a 112-103 victory over the Miami Heat on Thursday.

With a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven finals, Dallas can now claim the crown by winning one of the two remaining games, but they will have to complete the feat in Miami, where the teams split the opening two games.

The Mavericks went on a 15-3 run to finish off the Heat, turning a three-point deficit into the comfortable victory amid chants of "Beat the Heat" from a boisterous crowd of 20,433.

"That was a big win for us, obviously," said Dirk Nowitzki, who inspired the Mavericks with 29 points. "We didn't want to go to Miami and give them basically two shots to close us out.

"So we kept plugging there in the fourth. And now we have to go down there and basically approach Sunday's game as game seven. You don't want to give this great team any hope."

The guard Jason Terry had a pair of three-pointers during the game-ending run, finishing with 21 points on eight-of-12 shooting and adding six assists.

Dallas shot 57%, including an eyebrow-raising 13 of 19 from beyond the arc. Terry was three for five from long range, draining two of those during the late-game run.

"All season long, ever since I've been a Maverick, I've been the guy in the fourth quarter they depended on to either make plays or make shots," said Terry.

"So I really relish that role. Regardless of what's going on throughout three quarters of the game, in the fourth quarter I know I'm depended on to come through. Thank God I was able to do that again tonight."

LeBron James disappeared once again in the fourth quarter, tallying only two points. The former NBA scoring champion and two-times MVP has now amassed a combined 11 points in the final quarter of the entire series.

James was blanked in the final frame of Tuesday's 86-83 Mavericks victory, and while he was more aggressive on Thursday, he had similar results.

"We as a team, we played good enough to win again," said James, who scored 17 points and had 10 rebounds and 10 assists. "We put ourself in position to win down the stretch. Guys made plays. They just made a few more than we did. That's what it came down to."

Dwyane Wade had 23 for the Heat, scoring 10 in the final quarter, while Chris Bosh added 19. Wade bruised his hip in the opening quarter when he collided with Dallas's Brian Cardinal.

He went to the locker room but returned shortly after and played 34 minutes in the emotionally charged affair.

"It was unfortunate I had to leave the game," said Wade. "But I came back and I finished it. Once you're on the court, you're on the court. I don't have no excuses. I was able to help my team get an opportunity to win. And I'll be fine Sunday."

Dallas shot 56.5% from the floor but were out-rebounded 36-26 by a Miami team that committed 16 turnovers on the way to registering consecutive losses for the first time this post-season.

The Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said Terry took on the responsibility of team leader when the Mavericks' best player, Nowitzki, was on the bench.

"He played great, and during periods where Dirk was out of the game we were going to him and he was delivering," Carlisle said. "Those are tough minutes for us because it's hard when Dirk is out of the game. But it's the total game we've all been preaching to Jet [Terry] since the play-offs began and tonight he did a terrific job."

Serena Williams: Is Women's Tennis Dead Without Williams?

Serena Williams Returns to Wimbledon to Defend Title

It had been nearly a year since Serena Williams played tennis until she played last week in Eastbourne, losing in the second round to Vera Zvonareva.

And, despite winning Wimbledon last year, Williams has had an extensive lay-off and still isn't in top form since returning in 2011.

But in a recent poll of eight SI.com experts, four claimed Williams would win Wimbledon.

The funny thing is, it actually didn't seem far-fetched.

Is this a sign that women's tennis is in dire straights, where not even the No. 1 women's tennis player in the world inspires much confidence?

READ MORE: Wimbledon 2011: The Top 25 Matches of the Last 25 Years

Carolina Wozniacki has been No. 1 for a while now, but she's not talked about in particularly glowing terms. Since when does the top player in tennis have a so-so serve? Since when does the No. 1 player play so poorly in the French Open?

Zvonareva, No. 3 in the world, has certainly capitalized on the unrest at the top, but she's not a dominant player.

Same goes for Li Na.

Up until Roland Garros, former No. 1 Maria Sharapova was rising in the ranks. But her loss to Na, complete with the same problems that have plagued her since 2008, painted the picture that she still had issues with her game (most noticeably, her startling propensity to commit unforced errors).

The truth is, right now, Williams still has the chance to win in Wimbledon even after surgery and months of rehabilitation. So is the state of women's tennis right now.

But we shouldn't take anything away from Williams if she wins this year. She's proven she is that dominant player rarely seen in women's tennis right now.

Women's tennis still has Williams, and that's certainly worth something.

Seattle Seahawks Offseason Analysis: Williams, Forsett, Brock Play Varied Roles

Mike Williams, Justin Forsett and Raheem Brock all played a key role in helping the Seahawks win the division and have continued to make noise through the media this offseason, but under varying circumstances.

The uncommon nature of the 2011 NFL offseason has influenced the unique media coverage surrounding the situation; hindered in their efforts to work on the field during the offseason, players and coaches have embarked upon new opportunities to connect with fans and NFL peers through the use of the media and social media.

In the near future I will analyze some key Seahawks and their off-the-field, offseason performances to this point; my focus will come from a sociological perspective, in an attempt to understand the effects of players’ actions on more than just a surface level.

My analyses focused on the Totem and Panopticism have been primarily looking at the team and organization as a whole; these next analyses will focus mainly on the individual and the potential effects of their offseason actions, but will conclude with the focus moving back to the team and organization.

With "no" communication between coaches and players, some players have taken the reins in leading their club this offseason; others have made the news in more fortuitous roles. Let’s examine this Seahawks trio and their offseasons a little more closely.

Mike WilliamsFinding salvation through hard work

Mike Williams’ NFL comeback with Seattle has been well documented. The former Top 10 pick ran himself out of the league after the 2007 season and returned in 2010 to catch 65 passes for Seattle.

However, despite his comeback success, Williams has maintained this offseason that 2010 was just the beginning, as he needs to improve all aspects of his game. In this interview after the unofficial organized workout, Williams makes it clear that he understands hard work and dedication to his craft are crucial in his quest to prove himself. As he explained to ESPN’s Mike Sando:

"There were a lot of plays I left out there that could have made a good season great. People are caught up in the story. I was never caught up in the story. I see a top No. 1 or No. 2 receiver in the league every year in Fitz (Larry Fitzgerald). I have to make my own noise."

Williams once played the part of a man not upholding his duty as an NFL star in the making, now showing a stark contrast through his devotion to proving himself.

His tireless work ethic (shown by five- to six-hours of cardio a day in various capacities) and continual spoken dedication towards improving, shows a drive and personal conquest that appears to go beyond economics or fame; Williams has begun to respond to his calling as a pro football player.

I’d like to further highlight Williams’ change in attitude using sociologist Max Weber’s theories surrounding “the calling,” these particular ideas published in 1905.

Weber explains that the idea of “the calling” creates a sound mindset for economic success, as a devotion to one's commercial interests coupled with economically rational ideas can create a machine like system; “… the essential elements of the attitude termed ‘the spirit of capitalism' are precisely those which we found to be content of the puritan asceticism of the calling, only without the religious foundation...”

Puritan asceticism discourages consumption for future prosperity; not a fight against wealth and profit, but rather against the temptations associated with them, the goal being future wealth and prosperity.

That moral devotion, if driven into the social fabric of an economy, potentially leads to economic success; as long as the individual stays within reasonable moral boundaries when pursuing the calling, it is one’s duty to pursue commercial interests. Weber believed the devotion of the calling could be successful if placed in the right economic system.

Back to Mike Williams. He is a classic example of proving to not be capable of abiding by the set of principles needed to succeed in the NFL—temptations associated with being an NFL star overrode the actual duty needed to attain those temptations.

Now, he’s driven by the goal of redeeming his wrong doing; driven by a hunger that’s only filled through NFL success, as per his offseason comments—Williams described boredom as seeing two movies in the same day, before 7 PM.

Weber noted that "the Puritans wanted to be men of the calling"; Williams is struggling without the ability to demonstrate his devotion to becoming an NFL star, which would be practicing with his team and coaches for the 2011 season.

But on his own, admittedly lonely at times without football, he has been devoted to preparing himself for when the time comes, currently answering the calling of pundits and deflecting old temptations during the most uncertain of times.

Justin Forsett and Raheem Brock play the role of offseason, locker room communicators

With the advancements in technology, players have become more creative in their method of communication with the general public during the lockout—Williams' sense of humor and humility has begun to gain the liking of the media.

The discontentment, boredom and general confusion surrounding the lockout has been presented through the media in a variety of ways. Given the volatility in conjunction with the lockout, the content released has been unusually charged at times in comparison to the run-of-the-mill offseason.

Two Seahawks who have made use of social media this offseason are Justin Forsett and Raheem Brock. Their use of the mechanism, however, was for different purposes and carried a different tune.

Before highlighting the contrast between their uses in media, I’d like to introduce an idea coined “the men of letters”  to the discussion; the term explained by Alexis de Tocqueville in his work highlighting the shift in power during the French revolution.

The term refers to a group of social intellectuals that had an influence on the change in social structure during the time of the Revolution, though their conquest started as powerless men. “…[N]one of the men of letters held posts of any kind, none was invested in authority...”—but they theorized as if one or both were true.

While this group lacked real power, they had the advantage of unveiling radical ideas when the national government was fragmented; in place of politicians who were serving their personal self interests, “the men of letters” were the voice of public opinion.

The result: They not only imparted their revolutionary ideas upon society, but also shaped the national temperament and outlook on life.

Back to the 2011 offseason. As ESPN’s Mike Sando highlights, Justin Forsett used social media as the main tool for organizing the workout at the University of Washington; his actions out of a desire for camaraderie and a need to begin working through the transition into a new offense.

Forsett is a player that has consistently fought to stay on a roster since the start of his career, a seventh-round pick by Seattle in 2008 who has displayed a "team first" toughness that has quietly placed him in a budding leadership role for the Seahawks; he is a true "man of letter" for them.

While Forsett used the media to assert leadership, Brock teamed with Seahawks free agent lineman Chester Pitts to create a crank call video reel aimed at Commissioner Goodell; some of the pranks hilarious, others up for interpretation. Chester Pitts did later say “no malice” was intended.

As a 2010 "man of letter" for Seattle, Brock was asserting a public opinion of the players in the locker room, also intended to represent other NFL players.

Unfortunately, Brock made news late last week after being arrested in Philadelphia for skipping out on a $27 bar tab and resisting arrest—some foggy details of the incident not important for the focus here—an unexpected twist to Brock's offseason.

As this is an exploration, I would like to offer two interpretations of how Brock and Forsett are connected to the "men of letters" concept and, as a result, have an effect on the Seahawks.

Forsett is obviously attempting to take a leadership role for the team in the offseason, willing to help shape the temperament of the Seahawks' offseason workouts. The NFL is currently fragmented and Forsett has taken the role of publicly showing the Seahawks' desire to practice as a team, at the most premier of facilities—Brock was not a part of the attendance list provided by the Seattle PI.

As for Brock, I personally do not know how the Seahawks organization perceived the video or his recent actions. Brock was an attitude setter for the defense in 2010, improving his play in the second half of the season when needed most—he had a career year in 2010, his first away from Indianapolis, but only signed a one-year deal in Seattle.

His on field leadership and performance could make him a lead candidate for a new contract in 2011, but unfortunately he now has been arrested twice in less than a year.

Forsett has been a positive factor in a variety of roles for this team in his three-year career, and has proven that he is focused on aiding the transition to a new offense in 2011. He is consistently described as one of the toughest players on the team.

When asked during a Seattle Times chat last season which teammate he would want watching his back in a fight, Mike Williams responded (scroll to the bottom of the chat) “Easy, Justin Forsett.”

Brock had a career high 9.5 sacks in 2010, but his offseason has question marks in comparison to the directed Forsett.

They have played differing roles as “men of letters” in the offseason. Are we witnessing part of the transition among the tough, vocal leaders in the Seahawks locker room?

Are Williams and Forsett ready to fill the void that would be left by Brock's potential departure as a free agent, or is Brock too valuable to a Seahawks defensive line that can lose as many as six players from last year's roster, his attitude one the Seahawks are not yet prepared to lose?

These questions will be answered once the lockout is lifted, when the transition into 2011 officially continues for the Seahawks. The next piece in the series will take a closer look at some of the potential transitions at major positions heading into next season. Stay tuned.

Cristiano Ronaldo: Will Famous Footballer Lead Real Madrid Back to the Top?

Cristiano Ronaldo Is Real Madrid's Biggest Star, But Will Los Blancos Get Back to the Top?

For a proud club like Real Madrid, recent results are unacceptable.

Los Blancos have 31 La Liga crowns to their name, yet haven't won one since 2008. Real Madrid hasn't won the Champions League since 2002, adding insult to injury.

There was a victory over Barcelona in this year's Copa Del Rey, which was a big step forward, but on the biggest stages in football, Los Blancos fell short. With all of the talent that is on the roster, you'd think that there would be better results.

Not all of this is on the talent, but the management, which has squandered the immense offensive depth on the roster. Throw in injuries to Kaka, and you can see how Real Madrid has fallen short of expectations.

However, if Los Blancos are going to rebound and unseat Barcelona atop the league, it has to start utilizing the goal scorers on the depth chart.

Defense helps win championships, but you can't sacrifice offense to try and be a defensive powerhouse, especially when you have scorers all over the lineup card.

MUST READ: World Football Transfer Rumours: The 20 Most Overrated Players on the Market

Guys like Ronaldo and Kaka need to be set free and allowed to use their creativity to put the ball in the back of the net. When you can put pressure on an opposing team's defense, it opens up so many more opportunities on both ends of the pitch.

Ronaldo is the type of player that can lead a club to greatness, now Los Blancos need to be set free by their manager. Then, and only then, will they start to experience the success they're used to.

So far, Real Madrid has been hesitant to do just that, and it has shown as Barcelona, a team that knows how to get out and run, has risen to the top of the world, leaving Los Blancos in the dust.

Ashley Young Still Not Signed by Manchester United, but Getting Closer

Sir Alex Ferguson has been the favorite to sign Aston Villa's 25-year-old winger Ashley Young for months, and the deal is edging ever closer to getting done.

New Villa boss Alex McLeish will not stand in the way of the 15 million transfer, and though Liverpool has also been swirling, the Englishman prefers Manchester United.

Despite winning a record 19th league title, United is still looking to revamp with Phil Jones signed from Blackburn and Young's arrival probably imminent.

'What If You Lived At Ikea' Is 375 Sq. Ft. Of Pre-Packaged Home

Filed under:

Living in Ikea would be a lot like living at home, except the furniture is already built so there's none of those tiny wrenches and missing screw stuff to deal with. Oh yeah, there's also the fact that they seem to think people can live totally comfortably in under 400 square feet of space with minimalist household tools. Would it work? Is it comfortable? That's the theme behind Christian Gideon's latest set of photos, "What if you lived at Ikea?"

Gideon, his brother Dylan and their buddy Michael hung out in the pre-created living space at their local Ikea, waiting for staff and customers to roll on through, picking up their Ekby Gruven and other easy-to-build furniture along the way, and snapping shots of the living situations there-in. And because you're wondering, they thought the bedrooms were the most true-to-life of every area they frollicked.

Carson Kressley Talks 'Carson Nation,' Tweeting About Man Boobs (VIDEO)

Carson Kressley on 'Live With Regis and Kelly'Former 'Queer Eye for the Straight Guy' star Carson Kressley is taking his fashion advice on the road for his new show, 'Carson Nation,' which premieres this month on OWN. He described the show Friday on 'Live With Regis and Kelly' (weekdays, syndicated), and also got props on his Twitter skills from guest host Kara DioGuardi, who said she personally hasn't figured out how to use the medium properly.

"I have a vintage Airstream and my own truck," Kressley said of the show, "and me and my assistant drive it across country, and we stop at all the towns that need our help, which is a lot." A clip from the show featured Kressley helping a woman with her "man jeans."

DioGuardi said she was glad that Kressley tweets, particularly a recent post in which Kressley included a photo of his "moobs," or man-boobs. "Oh, I know a guy who has those," DioGuardi said. "Simon Cowell."

The Size of Christina Aguilera's 'The Voice' Paycheck Might Surprise You

Filed under:

Christina AguileraChristina Aguilera is definitely the biggest name of all the coaches on NBC's 'The Voice,' but how much bigger?

The singer/actress makes big money off of her latest gig as coach on NBC's hit battle of the bands show, but you might be surprised to hear just how much. Brace yourself.

Aguilera reportedly earns a staggering $225,000 per episode. Yup. That means Christina makes 2.25x the amount of the future winner of the show's $100,000 prize -- every episode. So in just eight episodes, Christina has grossed $1,800,000 since the show's April 26 premiere. Not too shabby for a month-and-a-half of work!

And it gets better. Christina's co-stars Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton only make $75,000 per episode, which is no doubt an enviable paycheck, but it means that Xtina makes $150K more per episode than her male colleagues. Break that glass ceiling, girl!

WWE: 10 Wrestlers That Work Better as Faces Than as Heels

Professional wrestling has always been about good versus evil, heroes versus villains, babyfaces versus heels.

Some wrestlers are born to make people despise. JBL, for example, does not have the sympathy to be a successful face.

Others that are incredibly versatile and can work from both sides of the spectrum with equal success.

There are also those that the fans would not believe in as heels and, finally, there are the select few that have enjoyed such successful face runs that their work as heels has been over-shadowed.

In this article, I will list ten wrestlers that function better and whose characters make more sense when they have the crowd cheering for them.

NBA playoffs: New York Knicks back in the mix after major rebuilding | David Lengel

The most infamous NBA franchise are where they used to belong but the might of the Celtics stand in their way

On Sunday the New York Knicks will play the Boston Celtics in the first round of the NBA playoffs ? New York's first appearance in the post-season since 2004. On the court for the Knickerbockers will be two bona fide NBA superstars, Amar'e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony, in the prime of their careers, a scenario that was the stuff of fantasy a year ago. For these Knicks, this post-season series is their signature on a season that marks their return to relevance in New York and the NBA.

Ten years ago the Toronto Raptors bounced the Knicks from the opening round of the playoffs, and fans consoling themselves inside Madison Square Garden, known here as the World's Most Famous Arena, sensed that the times were indeed a-changing. Still, those diehards couldn't have possibly known what was about to hit them ? over the next decade, the building on 34th street would house the most infamous franchise the NBA had to offer.

In a league where oligarchs can't write blank checks at will, and where payrolls are kept in line with revenues via a salary cap, missteps by men in suits managing those spending restrictions can cripple a team's ability to rebuild for years. Until this season, this has been the long-running theme of pro basketball in New York City.

The problems with the Knicks and the salary cap management pre-dated Isaiah Thomas, the former general manager, probably one of the most disliked characters in Knicks history. The team owner, James Dolan, hired Thomas in December of 2003, and almost immediately upon his arrival, the Hall of Fame point guard exacerbated the Knicks already difficult salary cap situation.

New York slipped further and further into NBA purgatory as Thomas dealt for high priced, low return players such as Stephon Marbury and Eddie Curry. Unable to dig out from the mountain of bad contracts, the Knicks couldn't dream of bidding for top free agent talent, and New York, wearing skintight salary cap shackles, had sadly become irrelevant ? unthinkable in a city known for passionate support of its basketball team.

Thomas became head coach for two seasons, and in 2008 was let go. Donnie Walsh, a Bronx boy in exile, who had managed the Indiana Pacers to 16 post-seasons, was brought in to shake up the team. The mission ? forget about winning for the time being, and dump the salary duds in time to make cap space to compete for the free agent class of 2010, a group that included the best player in the world, LeBron James. In two short years, Walsh was able to accomplish what no Knick executive had done, clear the deck.

The dream of landing James was just that, as he nixed New York to join his buddies in Miami. The consolation prize was Stoudemire, a player viewed with suspicion by Knicks fans, but who, early in 2010, proved that New York had their first true franchise player since Patrick Ewing. Young and athletic talent surrounded Stoudemire, making the most of the head coach Mike D'Antoni's high-octane offensive style, lifting the toxic clouds off of the Garden.

In late February came the fruition of a long-rumoured deal in the form of a three-way exchange with Denver and Minnesota, bringing Anthony, without a doubt, one of the top five players in the NBA, to New York along with proven point guard Chauncey Billups. The Knicks got a second franchise player in their bid to keep up with the Joneses in Miami, but relinquished several talented players in a trade that some believed was unnecessary ? Anthony, a player with strong links to NYC could have come to the Knicks as a free agent after the season without New York dealing any of their young guns.

New York has struggled since the trade, having to come together as a team quickly with a rebuilt roster, just in time for the playoffs. The trade for Anthony is seen as part of a long-term plan, but questions linger about chemistry between Stoudemire and Anthony, and whether the Knicks can acquire the missing pieces to propel New York to their first title since 1973. For now, the Knicks will have at least two post-season games in New York, and that long-sought opportunity to breathe playoff life back into the Garden.

EASTERN CONFERENCE PLAYOFF PREVIEW

Boston Celtics v New York Knicks

Boston come into these playoffs knowing their window of opportunity for a second championship in four seasons is closing ? the dynamic core of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen are slightly vulnerable in their old age. Plus, their center Kendrick Perkins was controversially dealt away at the trade deadline, upsetting the head coach, Doc Rivers, some former team-mates, and the applecart. There are other issues with Boston, such as the health of Shaquille O'Neal. Still, they should crush the undersized Knicks whose time is yet to arrive. Celts in five.

Chicago Bulls v Indiana Pacers

Derrick Rose will be the NBA's Most Valuable Player, and if that doesn't give you confidence in Chicago, the Bulls owner, Jerry Reinsdorf, will. He said in early March that his team can win four championships. Not one, four. Chicago does play smothering defense, which should keep the Pacers best player, Danny Granger, in check. Bulls sweep.

Miami Heat v Philadelphia 76ers

When is a 58-win season considered to be a disappointment? How about when you have three of the NBA's top 15 players, LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh on the same team. Can the Sixers pull off the upset? Well, they have a better head coach in Doug Collins, an excellent point guard in Jrue Holiday, and a nice big juicy target to shoot at. Miami's out in a shocker. Sixers in seven.

Orlando Magic v Atlanta Hawks

Orlando's Dwight Howard is awesome and Atlanta is a dump. I really don't like it there, so I'm taking it out on the Hawks. Seriously folks, Atlanta will double team Howard, and the big man will kick it out to multiple Magic men to drain three's all night long. Magic in five.

WESTERN CONFERENCE PLAYOFF PREVIEW

San Antonio Spurs v Memphis Grizzlies

If you would have told me before the seasons that the Spurs would win 61 games I would have said to go have another puff on ye old pipe. The clock is ticking on San Antonio but if they do go out, it ain't going to be against Memphis. For the Grizzlies, there's history to be made here ? Memphis have never won a post-season game. Spurs in five.

Los Angeles Lakers v New Orleans Hornets

Can someone tell me why Kobe Bryant hasn't been suspended for muttering anti-gay slurs at a referee? A $100K fine? Big deal ? that's like taking a buck 75 off me. You can't allow that sort of thing to go on in the NBA or anywhere. Let me see, if I go into work today and scream that at someone, I wonder what would happen? The Lakers legend Jerry West criticised the team earlier in the season saying: "The reason you 'can't play defense' is because you can't", and even the coach, Phil Jackson, agreed. It will catch up with them, but not yet. Lakers in five.

Dallas Mavericks v Portland Trailblazers

It's easy to chalk up an easy series win for Dallas. Not so. Portland has a lot of kitchen sink to throw at Dirk Nowitzki in Marcus Camby, Gerald Wallace and LaMarcus Aldridge, and this will be no walk in the Pacific Northwest for these Texans. Blazers in seven.

Oklahoma City Thunder v Denver Nuggets

Good series, a lot of fun. Contrary to expectations, the Nuggets have been excellent since Anthony was traded for half of the Knicks, and there's been lots of jabs at him from the Rockies. One question for Denver ? who will take the big shots down the stretch? Oklahoma has an easy answer ? Kevin Durant won the NBA scoring title. I like Denver here, with a bit of bias coming me from here in NY. Nuggets in seven.

Despite all the anticipation, tonight's fight between Alistair Overeem and Fabricio Werdum turned into a disappointing fight you'd expect to see in early mixed martial arts (MMA), when fighters trained in only one discipline and did everything they could to take their fights into their realm of success.

From early on in the fight, it was obvious that Werdum wanted nothing to do with Overeem's striking. However, Werdum actually did find some success when he was forced to stand with the 2010 K-1 World Grand Prix Champion.

After being stuffed easily on several double leg takedown attempts, Werdum began trying to bait Overeem to join him on the ground. At one point, Werdum actually pleaded with his hands clasped for Overeem to dive into his guard.

Eventually, Werdum was forced to pull guard in desperation. The few times Werdum was successful in dragging Overeem into his guard, he was unable to mount any type of offense from his back, which may have ended up being the deciding factor on the scorecards.

In fact, Werdum out-landed Overeem 69-48 in total strikes according to CompuStrike. While Overeem unquestionably landed a greater number of power strikes, Werdum was able to hold his own against one of the most respected strikers in the heavyweight division.

By pulling guard, Werdum showed that he would rather lose the fight by desperately attempting submissions for 15 minutes than risk standing with Overeem for any period of time. If Werdum had attempted to stand with Overeem, the outcome of this fight may have been very different.

While Overeem is the more technical and powerful striker than Werdum, he has shown a suspect chin over the course of his career. Seven of Overeem's 11 career losses in MMA, and three of his four losses in kickboxing came as a result of stoppages due to strikes.

Werdum may not be a great striker by any means, but he was always one clean shot away from forcing Overeem to quit like his brother, Valentijn Overeem, had earlier in the night. Werdum was having some success with knees from the clinch when the fight was standing, but he decided not to continue to exploit that success throughout the fight.

Werdum knows himself better than anyone else though, so maybe he did make the right decision to desperately try to take this fight to the ground. Perhaps Werdum would have gotten knocked out if he continued to stand with Overeem, but at least he would have actually forced Overeem to beat him rather than beating himself.

Stanley Cup Finals 2011: Eulogy for the Vancouver Canucks from a Bruins Fan

Tim Thomas and the Boston Bruins scratched and clawed their way to a 4-3 series win over the highly touted Vancouver Canucks. The Bruins destroyed the Canucks both mentally and physically in this series, leaving no doubt in any NHL fan's mind as to who was the better team.

I enjoyed every minute of Vancouver's slow and painful demise—so much so that I figured I would write a eulogy for the deceased:

The 2010-2011 Vancouver Canucks were a great team. In the regular season.

Powered by a superb top line, the Nucks led the entire NHL in goals scored. Their indomitable goalie, Roberto Luongo, helped them secure the league lead in goals against.

Very poetically, the Canucks entered the Stanley Cup following a win in Game 7 against Chicago, Game 6 against Nashville and Game 5 against San Jose.

They probably assumed they would sweep Boston.

Vancouver came into the series with all the qualities of a championship team. It had the look, the swagger and the pedigree of a winner. "Hey, we have the best offensive players, the best power play, and our goalie is an Olympic gold medal winner. How could they beat us?"

Not so fast, Vancouver. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Did Vancouver have the remarkable Sedin twins? Yes, it did.

Unfortunately for the twins, they did not have the testicular fortitude to handle the Stanley Cup.

Read that again.

These are two of the most exceptional players in the NHL, and they couldn't "handle" the Stanley Cup?

Looks like a choke job to me.

How about that gold medal winner? What's his name? LeBrongo? Yes, him. After a masterful Game 1 in which he shut down the Bruins with 36 saves, Roberto Luongo slowly started to unravel.

He played well in Game 2, stopping just enough shots to get the 3-2 victory in overtime. Then the unraveling began to speed up.

You know when you have a thread in your clothes, and you pull it, and all of the sudden you've ripped your pants right down the middle? That's what the Bruins did to Luongo.

He went from indomitable to insufferable in a matter of eight goals. Eight goals. In one game. Repeat after me, "Whoever has the hot goalie wins in the NHL."

Let's go back to Game 1 for a moment. To "The Bite." I mean, seriously, Alex Burrows, are you human? Are you some sort of Canadian moose dressed up in hockey gear? Burrows must not have realized that the Charlie Bit My Finger video involved a couple of babies who were only two years old.

Maxim Lapierre must have liked what he saw.  He joined the party by stuffing his finger into everyone's faces, coming off as a total jerk who deserves nobody's respect. After Game 1, Lapierre was looking like he was going to step up big time for Vancouver.

Nope. No dice. Lapierre was all talk. It's amazing how many of these players talk a big game, but when the lights go on and the game starts they just roll over.

Aaron "Bleeping" Rome.

Forget Aaron Boone, this guy nearly paralyzed the Bruins' most clutch goal scorer in Game 3. Shame on him. And to make it worse, his entire team defended him after the incident. In retrospect, Rome's hit is the jolt the Bruins needed to get going. Following the hit, Boston outscored the dirty Canucks 21-4.

That's justice.

Speaking of justice, let me bring you back to Luongo's remarks following a Game 5, 1-0 victory by the Canucks. Luongo was asked about the game-winning goal by Lapierre off Timmy Thomas and how hard it is for a goalie to save a puck that bounces off the backboards toward the front of the net. His response?

"It's not hard if you're playing in the paint, so, it's an easy save for me."

Easy save for me"? Really? Didn't you just let up eight goals in one game and then get pulled after four goals in the next one? Nice move, smart-ass. I guess playing in the paint makes it easier to be a terrible goalie. So bad, in fact, that Vegas had odds on the chances of him being pulled at five to one!

And that's the thing about Luongo: Yes, he looks like a stuck-up, arrogant blockhead, but he plays the part too. It's so great when someone validates all the bad feelings you have toward them by saying something so asinine.

But they aren't all like him.

Manny Malhotra could be the main character in a Hollywood blockbuster. He sustained a career threatening eye injury on March 16 (side note about the video: Even the Canucks Youtube team can't do anything right—that is one of the worst, least-insightful videos I have ever seen of an injury), and many people thought he was done for the year. Miraculously, he was back for Game 2 of the finals.

Just an amazing story.

Too bad it didn't have a Hollywood ending. Despite Malhotra showing his teammates how to be a class-act and a true professional, none of them followed his lead.

Instead, they resorted to biting. They resorted to illegal hits to the head. They resorted to the behavior of a child.

All of that wouldn't have been so terrible, except for the fact that these players are supposed to be role models. They have fans who worship their every move—including the dumb ones.

After a tremendous year, a fan base that was treated to the best record in the NHL and an electrifying playoff run decided to act like the morons they root for.

The riots were awful. Just mindbogglingly stupid. There were 150 injured, including one in serious condition with a head injury. There were 15 cars burned. And apparently, taking a page out of Alex Burrows' playbook, there were police officers who claimed they were bitten.

People actually bit police officers! Vancouver, everybody!

Before I finish up, let us not forget the ultimate sign of cockiness. The "let's plan a parade before we even win the championship" move. The over-confidence and arrogance is simply pathetic—why don't you win a single championship before you start planning parades?

But, I digress. We are gathered here today to speak of the message you taught us, not to dissect the shattered legacy you left behind.

So now, as you lay buried by the Bruins under six feet of dirt, let us remember your enduring lesson: Playing with talent wins you awards, but playing with heart wins you championships.

Rest in agony.

Sincerely,

Bruins Nation

NBA: How to Avoid a Lockout

The NFL lockout seems to be coming to a resolution.  Hopefully.  And for that lockout, I was on the players side.  The owners wanting another billion dollars just seemed too ridiculous to me.  Both sides were greedy, but the owners were more greedy to me.

As for the NBA, I am firmly on the owners side.  It's easy to see that franchises are losing money because the system is broken.  Now, while I don't agree with everything the owners want, I do think that a lot of what they are proposing makes sense.

Miami Heat's LeBron James secures minority share in Liverpool

? Liverpool regard partnership as key to expanding their brand
? Basketball player is excited over affiliation to club

The basketball star LeBron James has secured a minority stake in Liverpool after cutting a deal with the club's US owner.

Fenway Sports Group, which also owns baseball's Boston Red Sox, has struck an agreement with James's sports-marketing firm, LRMR Branding & Marketing, to be the representative for the controversial Miami Heat player around the world. In return James will become a minority owner in Liverpool. He said he was "excited to be affiliated with this incredible organisation" and looked forward to donning a red shirt and visiting Anfield.

"The first time I stepped on an NBA [National Basketball Association] court I became a businessman," James, 26, told the Wall Street Journal. "This is a great opportunity for me."

Liverpool regard the partnership as key to expanding their brand. The chairman, Tom Werner, said: "There are very few athletes who can match his global reach, appeal and iconic status ... We feel the business opportunities for both working and being identified together in emerging international markets will result in unforeseen opportunities that neither would have been able to realise alone."

In a statement Fenway said it would "aggressively explore global business opportunities for LRMR and LeBron James, future business, marketing, endorsement and philanthropic endeavors all over the globe".

LRMR's chief executive, Maverick Carter, a high-school team-mate of James, said partnering with Fenway would open up international business opportunities for the athlete.

Terms of the deal have not been disclosed but Fenway is expected to earn a small commission on deals it does on James's behalf. The 26-year-old is one of the richest sportsmen in the world, earning $15.8m (9.7m) from the Miami Heat and an estimated $30m a year from endorsements with companies including McDonald's, Nike, Bubbilicious and Coca-Cola.

A true rags to riches story, James was born in Akron, Ohio in 1984. His mother raised him on her own after his ex-convict father left them. Nicknamed "King James" while still in high school, James got his first Nike endorsement before he turned professional.

But James attracted some heat of his own last year after his controversial decision to quit the Cleveland Cavaliers. The move was announced in an hour-long TV show called "The Decision" and his former team were told minutes before the show was aired. Cleveland's owner, Dan Gilbert, called James' decision "selfish", "heartless", "callous" and a "cowardly betrayal". The move was also criticised by NBA commissioner David Stern. "I think that LeBron is a really good guy and he's going to be a great player and I don't think that this particular production showcased him to the best of our abilities," Stern said.

Fantasy Baseball: the Need for Speed

A trade in my league prompted me to once again take a look at some relatively available stolen base guys. The trade was Michael Bourn for Carlos Quentin and Andre Ethier. I thought that was way too steep of a price to pay for runs and stolen bases.

I’m not saying the following guys are better than Bourn, but they can be had for a much cheaper bounty. The stats are based on the past 15 days. He has the added benefit of shortstop and second base eligibility. That allows you to use sluggers in your outfield slots.

  • Michael Bourn, Houston Astros:  .308 average, 16 hits, seven runs, three RBI, seven stolen bases
  • Jordan Schafer, Atlanta Braves:  .245 average, 13 hits, 10 runs, one home run, three RBI, six stolen bases
  • Alcides Escobar, Kansas City Royals:  .392, 20 hits, 11 runs, three RBI, six stolen bases
  • Alexi Casilla, Minnesota Twins:  .373, 19 hits, eight runs, six RBI, five stolen bases
  • Charlie Blackmon, Colorado Rockies:  .410, 16 hits, five runs, six RBI, five stolen bases

I realize that Bourn is the superior option of this quintet, but he’s not good enough in my mind to justify trading two sluggers away. Not when stolen bases are available on the waiver wire.

Casilla, for instance, has been hitting .320 with 19 runs, 11 RBI, and eight stolen bases since the beginning of May.

I don’t have an issue with shaking up your lineup to improve a particular category, but you’re basically robbing Peter to pay Paul when you give up that much power to add to your speed categories.

2011 NBA Mock Draft: New York Knicks Rumored to Have Interest in Bismack Biyombo

Is Biskmack Biyombo?s 2011 NBA Draft Stock On The Rise?

Congolese prospect Bismack Biyombo is starting to garner more attention from NBA teams, and he just may be a trade up target for the New York Knicks.

Jonathan Givony of Draft Express reported on his Twitter account that the Knicks are hoping Biyombo will fall to them, but are considering moving up.

The Knicks are hoping Biyombo drops to them at 17. That's unlikely, so they're exploring moving up. May have to jump ahead of Warriors at 11

While this is certainly interesting news, I am not sure if jumping ahead of the Warriors will be high enough.

Biyombo will be seeing the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday, and from everything I have heard out of Pistons nation I am positive that they are very high on drafting Biyombo.

The Pistons have pick No.8 of the 2011 NBA draft, and there isn?t even a guarantee that Biyombo will fall that far.

Either way, it appears that?s Bismack Biyombo?s 2011 NBA draft stock is really starting to rise.

US Open Golf 2011: Will Bubba Watson Define Moving Day?

Bubba Watson Has the Game to Shake Up 2011 U.S. Open Golf

If you haven't been playing close attention to the 2011 U.S. Open you probably haven't seen Bubba Watson. Not because his game has been nondescript, but because his camo pants make him nearly impossible to see on the course.

In fact, Watson's game is many things, but nondescript is not one of them

When Bubba Watson is playing good he is as good as any golfer on the planet. His distance is unmatched. His short game is top-notch, and his putting displays deft touch. His in-round consistency leaves something to be desired however.

He put that in-round inconsistency on full display in the opening round of the 2011 U.S. Open. He fired out to a 3-under before giving up ground and finishing at even par.

Well, he opened play on Friday in the same not-quite trendy camo pants and then proved as quickly as possible that his pants wouldn't be the only similarity from his Thursday round.

READ MORE: 2011 U.S. Open Golf: Five Contenders That Can Catch Rory McIlroy

Watson's up and down play has carried over. Watson easily birdied the opening par-4 first. But he went on to fire a 4-over 75. He barely made the cut.

Considering he is 15 shots back a chance to win is not very realistic, but it's not impossible. If Watson can put together back-to-back rounds it is not out of the realm of possibility that he could go 10-under over two days. And that turns his 4-over to a 6-under.

However, the odds are he will give the course back any strokes he takes from it. The best bet of all with Watson is that whatever he does it will be entertaining.

This week's second Talking TV with Ryan and Ryan podcast is a bit of an odd mixture. Ryan McGee and I talk about 'The Voice,' NBC's hit singing show, 'Falling Skies,' an alien invasion drama that arrives on TNT Sunday, and 'Outcasts,' another sci-fi drama that premieres on Saturday on BBC America. (By the way, the photo here is of Colin Cunningham, who is one of the best things, if not the best thing, about 'Falling Skies').

Running times for the podcast are below. In case you missed it, in the podcast we recorded earlier in the week, we talked all 'Doctor Who,' all the time.

UFC News: Stephan Bonnar Explains Lawsuit Involving Josh Koscheck

It seems like no one can get along with Josh Koscheck, including Stephan Bonnar.

The UFC light heavyweight competitor, recently gave his thoughts on the UFC welterweight and explained the situation regarding the lawsuit involving "Kos" and Bonnar's clothing line, "Trash Talkin' Kids," during a UFC Q&A session last week.

Koscheck did not respond kindly to his image branded onto a t-shirt, and it has forced him to take legal action and sue Bonnar and his clothing line. The recent war of words between the two fighters has prompted Bonnar to request a bout with the welterweight contender, even committing to drop to 185 lbs, if need be.

"Words cannot describe how bad I want to kick Josh Koscheck's ass right now," Bonnar said during the UFC Q&A session.

And judging by Bonnar's response, it is doubtful that this newfound rivalry will end anytime soon.

Glee'Glee' has finally gotten itself a writing staff! While more cooks in the kitchen generally doesn't equal a better product, we have hopes for this staffing change, especially with the talent they're bringing on board.

According to Deadline, 'Glee' co-creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan will be joined by 'Chuck' producer Allison Adler as co-executive producer.

Comic book scribe and playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will serve as co-producer and 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' veteran Marti Noxon and writer/actor Michael Hitchcock will be consulting producers.

Snowball and Pepper Take-on the Treadmill and Hearts Everywhere Smile

Cats don't need exercise. They're perfect just the way they are. But for some reason these little guys can't help but be totally enthralled with the treadmill. And it makes sense if you think about it. While we might be all motivated, going for the run of our life, getting healthy, getting in shape and buff, to a cat the treadmill is a totally foreign contraption. Humans, on a moving walkway inside the house, huffing and puffing and fighting to walk in place.

So seeing it from Snowball and Pepper's perspectives, it makes complete sense that they would stare and poke and prod with their little furry mittenesque hands. They're simply looking out for our well being.

NBA Draft 2011: DeAndre Liggins and 5 Players the Orlando Magic Should Avoid

With the 2011 NBA Draft on the horizon, the Orlando Magic don't have all that much to work with on draft night (second round 52nd overall), but there are some players general manager Otis Smith should avoid taking, like DeAndre Liggins with their one and only pick.

The Orlando Magic are seemingly in crisis mode trying to figure out how to retain Dwight Howard, making the draft buzz in Orlando all but non-existent. Fans have to remember, though, it's not unheard of to find a player in the second round that can help contribute during their rookie season.

That being said, these five players are not going to be any second round gems.

Keith Olbermann Says Anthony Weiner Isn't the Only Politician With a Scandal (VIDEO)

Keith OlbermannJon Stewart may have been unable to report on Anthony Weiner's resignation last night due to having the night off (bad timing!), but plenty of other commentators were willing to step up and give their opinions.

Among them was Keith Olbermann, who made some shocking assertions on 'Late Night With Jimmy Fallon' (Weeknights, 12:37AM ET on NBC).

Talking about Weiner's spectacular fall from grace, Olbermann dished out the criticism pretty evenly. Democrats, he said, abandoned Weiner because they "don't support their own." Republicans, on the other hand, "love to be on the right side of a scandal like this because it doesn't happen that often."

So why the intense media coverage of the scandal? It's gathered international interest, with footage of Weiner's chaotic resignation press conference airing all over the world last night. Olbermann think it's because Weinergate is easy for reporters to understand: It's given them "something that they can actually understand: A penis."

After Jimmy Fallon referred to Weiner's last name as "comedy gold", Olbermann then disclosed that Speaker of the House John Boehner answers to a rather salacious nickname of his own.
