Ruler on Ice has been getting better with each start. He gained stretch ground at Pimlico and then won a five furlong race at Monmouth Park on June 4. He appears to have hit his peak now.
In the end, the reason he wasn't on people's radars in this race may have been the reason he won. He didn't race in either the Kentucky Derby of the Preakness. And his fresh legs showed.
Animal Kingdom led almost the entire race, but he began to fade down the stretch and the fresher Ruler On Ice was able to over take him. That makes 10 out of the last 12 times that the Belmont winner has not run in the Preakness.
