US Open Golf 2011: Congressional Will Be a Long Day in the Rough for the Field

Congressional Offers a Long and Rough 2011 US Open Golf

If you want parity, there is no better sport to offer such a thing as golf. There hasn't been a repeat winner in any of the past ten majors.

It is the one sport where anyone can actually win at any time. The great thing about golf is that it isn't one man against the field.

It is more apropos to see it as one man against the course. Congressional offers its own special blend of majesty and potential pratfalls.

The field will have to deal with two things on Thursday when they tee off. The course is long, and it is rough.

The course is so long in fact, the sixth hole had to be altered to a par five instead of a par 4. The 555 yards were too tumultuous to get on in less.

The biggest note of the course is the rough. Congressional is cut in a way that the farther you get from the fairway, the longer the cut of grass.

A few yards into the cut could leave you down four or more inches of grass. From that deep, there is no way you will reach the green from an otherwise reachable position.

There will be a whole lot of laying up come Thursday. It will be a bomber's paradise, but don't count out the little guys. If you can stay consistent, the fairways will give you the best chance to beat the field.

Either way, this is sure to be a great weekend of golf. This is one sport that I am confident will once again surprise us when the next major champion is crowned.
